Can a ton of snails cause ammonia levels to rise in a 10 gal?

I have a 10 gal and started off with 22 shrimp about two months ago. I had three die today out of no where. I tested the water and my ammonia levels are high.

I've noticed that the snails in my aquarium have been breeding like crazy and the amount of poop has increased too. I'm going to do more frequent water changes, but I'd like to know if they're the source of the problem. My water levels tested normal until today.

I'm not sure what kind of snails they are, but I know for sure they're not rams horns.

What's the best way to deal with them? What options do I have other than picking them all out and killing them one by one?

Yeah, they can do that. The best way is to put a piece of romain lettuce in there overnight. The snails will eat it, and when you wake up in the morning, chances are there will be a bunch attached to it. Just pull out the lettuce and dispose of the snails in whatever fashion you desire lol.

+1^

i prefer just getting an assassin snail;)

I believe a snail population boom is a sign of over feeding. You should try to feed less.

Haha that's what I'm doing for my 15g, getting a few assassin snails. Just ordered some from mjordan! =]

Snails can easily cause water chemistry to get out of balance. You should do more frequent water changes & gravel vacuuming, along with snail population control measures (feed less, remove snails, and/or snail predators).
