Ammonia levels are .5 ppm

how much prime do you recommend putting in a ten gallon tank? During a 25% water change I use 5-6 drops.

1 mL/10G.. Each thread in the cap represents 1mL..

slow down... You are fine for now, but cut back. a 500mL should treat 5,000gallons..

looks like to me you are only beginning to cycle your tank. also what kind of test kit are you using? dont use the strips they are not reliable i would suggest API master test kit. you will know when the tank has cycled when you have 0 ammonia, 0 nitrItes, and a nitrAte reading. this will take some time due to the need of water change with the prime. FYI a fish less cycle is the way to go but you can also use Tetra SafeStart. it is the only product out there that really provides the beneficial bacteria that is needed for an instant cycle.

The water change advise is good.

Ammonia cant hurt your fish if you have tipped it down the drain and topped up the tank with fresh water.

What you want to try and do is keep the ammonia around 0.25. Thats low enough that it wont harm your fish, but enough so that the cycle will start.

If it's taken 10 days for your ammonia to reach 0.5 then it's not rising very fast and you may only need to change 10 or 20% per day to keep it under control. But do a couple of changes today / tomorrow to get the level down.

Like was said above, watch for the nitrite to rise as the cycle starts, just water change your way through that as well. When both Ammonia and Nitrite drop back to zero then you have some working cycle and you can get a couple more fish.

Good Luck

I think the treatment for ammonia/nitrite is higher though.
I would worry more about adding too little rather than adding too much. I accidentally dumped 2-3 capfuls into a 10 gal once during an emergency, with no negative results. The website says "To detoxify nitrite in an emergency, up to 5 times normal dose may be used."

He has been dosing pretty well... and doesn't have nitrites yet, unless i missed that..

so i tested again this morning. Im still getting a .5ppm ammonia level. Will the ammonia go down in time with each water change?

2g WC/10G= 1/fifth or 20%

20% of .5ppm= .1ppm reduction

20% of .4ppm= .08ppm reduction

20% of .32ppm= .064ppm reduction

that should help....

yeh im still getting .5ppm for the past three days now. Ive been doing 25% water change and its not going down. Cant figure out why.
