Or atleast I think it is.

About 2 months ago I got 2 fiddler crabs for my 55 gallon tank. A male and a female and all was going fine and dandy until about a month ago they disappeared. So I tore my entire room apart looking for them thinking they climbed the heater cord up and out of my tank. After looking for about an hour I decided that they had died and been eatin or they had crawled out of my room and died. So today rolls along and Im turning my 10 gallon into a mini reef. It got me in the mood to clean both tanks so after setting up the 10 gallon I decided to change 2 of the 4 pads in my Penguin 350. When I pull of the top something darted away. I kinda freaked out and I was like "There is NO WAY that is what I think it was!" So I proceded to remove the filter pads and sure enough both of the crabs had been living in the filter for the past month!!! And they both seem to be doing great!

Kinda amazing if you think about how crappy those living conditions are! lol

its a cool story i would have never looked there.

hey i had a similar story, after my coolest crab passed away, we got a new crab (to my reluctance). she would disappear for a matter of DAYS and the first time we thought she somehow died and got eaten or crawled somewhere and died. but then she appeared out of nowhere and we were relieved that she just went to hide somewhere. see, my old cool crab would never do that, she (yes, it was female) would be excavating and doing all sorts of acrobatics around the tank - always in sight. so this new girl got us by surprise. one day we found her in the filter, which wasn't so hard cause it was see-through, just blocked by a bunch of aquarium muck!
So yeah, crabs do that. What a relief it must be for you!!

man i totally thought you were gonna find some baby crabs in that filter.... but your story is good too....

Cool story! I also thought you were going to find mom and pop crab and baby crablets!!! Every now and then one of my baby plecos sucks it's way up the HOB filter outlet and I find it living in that filter grime! Ewwww!

How did they get in there? I can't imagine they went through the propeller! Did you have the two top pieces on top of the filter? I wonder if they climbed in through the top?

They actually crawled up the filter intakes and were living in my Penguin 350. I put them back in the tank but the next morning they were living in my Emperor 280 filter. I didnt actually look in the filters for baby crabs yet but that might be a good idea as they were both in the same one for over a month. I'll do that soon and see if there are any babies.

very interesting indeed.
