Angel expert advice plz

Here he is, last week (when he was inocent):
yours looks almost identical to the angel I saved from certain death at work, mine just has a touch more black,

do you think adding tall plants in a bush type setting to give the tank some kind of separation would help?

definitely ..any fish getting picked on needs a place to hide..I keep tall cryto's in my tanks..every time one was getting targeted..he made a bee line for the crypts. save his behind many times.

Great info all!

I currently have my 75G in transition towards real plants. I would say I am 1/3 real at this point by volume, but things havne't grown out.

I will definatetly re-arrange some large items in the tank. I have noticed to your point Star_Rider, that my 2 smaller Angels will hover behind the intake pipe for my HoB. I also have a fake 18" hornwort that I have used to wrap around and hide the pipe from view. When the larger Angel is in his 'mood', that's where they are at. Periodically they will go to the opposite side of the tank where I have another 18" plant and a medium sized greek decoration.

As for the behavior, I would say it is not 'frequent' outside of feeding times, but I did observe the Angels yesterday for ~2-2.5 hours after I fed them (moved the chair so I could watch TV and them). I did observe the larger Angel on occassion give chase for short distance, but no actual contact that I could see, but more often than not I saw all three swimming together pecking at the gravel for left-overs...?

Thanks again BTW, and I will change the aquascape up quite a bit this weekend.

Just thought I'd update this a bit. There have been a few interesting changes over the past 5-6 days!

The original (smaller) Angels - One is Black and the other is White - were originally being hurassed on occassion by the addition of the newly acquired (larger) Angel - he's Silver.

We'll, after about 4 days the Black Angel now has sparring matching back and forth with the Silver Angel. To my untrained eye I would say that they give what they take. There is definate contact but no injury, lost scales, etc. :whew:

Anyways, I have noticed an interesting twist...

Okay first, the Black and White often swim together - Never the Silver.

The White Angel NEVER attcks or acts aggressive - ever. On an extremely rare occasion (1-2x a day) if the Silver Angel, if he can get near enough, he will give chase and scare the White Angle away (no contact that I can observe).

The Black Angel, "appears" to me, to be keeping the Silver away from the White Angel...? If the Silver Angel swims too close the Black Angel will fake a charge and stop the Silver or if needed actually but the Silver Angel with his mouth, scaring him off. More often than not, the Black seems to be placing himself between the White and Silver (or this could just be my imagination, but it really looks that way most of the time).

On one occasion, I even witnessed the Black Angel 'ramming' the Silver Angel hard enough to knock him back and I actually HEARD the impact!!! It was awesome! Of course the Silver Angel retaliated, but not nearly as aggressive.

From what I can determine -

The Black gets aggressive if the Silver Angel gets too close or seems to get between the Black and the White Angels.

The White shows no aggression and is free to swim anywhere in the tank virtually unhurassed.

The Silver gets aggressive only if the others get too close to him (he has a favorite spot right smack in the middle of the tank! lol), or during feeding when they all get close together.

Thoughts? I thought these behaviors were pretty cool to see develop and though many of you would be interested so I thought I would share them :)

you may have a pair forming.

you definitely have males fighting for dominance..well actually it could be 2 females and 1 male;)

keep an eye on things..and keep a watchful eye out for aggressive fighting..angels can kill other angels..

Okay, 8.5 months later all was well in the Angels' Life. About 6 months ago I switched over to a 90G (see Sig) and again all was well. However, 2 months ago the Silver Angel (oldest) laid her first eggs on the intake of a filter. These were later eaten by her, but she again laid eggs (same result) about 3 weeks after (10-days ago).

The reason for my post is 2-fold:
1) there has been a shift in dominance I believe. The Black Angel is now virtually identical in size and although the Silver exhibits aggression up to about a month ago, now the Black Angel is even more protective of the White Angel (the smallest and still non-aggressive), and in addition to this
2) The Black Angel now corrals the Silver into a corner and periodically pecks at her. I have noticed in the last 4 days that some of her scales on her side are removed. No skin exposed, and only an area of 2-3 scales, but today I noticed 6 small areas like this.

Over the past 2-3 months each have picked on each other in what I would say was in a balanced manner (one day the silver would give it, the next the black would). But never any injuries.

Thoughts? Ideas to resolve this?

- Tank is medium-ly planted, but I add more every 2 weeks.
- All other fish are fine and are left completely alone (except when the Silver was laying her eggs of course).

P.S.
Both the Silver and White Angels have developed, on occasion, the same extension that I observed in the Silver use while she was laying her eggs. The black never had this.

the silver and white have the same extention?? breeding tube?
the Black has not displayed a tube?
the black and white may have paired..the silver is the brunt of the aggression of the pair.

she may be trying to entice the Black who may b male...
you will need to keep a close eye.
is the white a platinum?

Thanks for the reply Star.

Based on the "Breeding-Tube" I've seen I believe that the White and Silver Angels are female, and the black angel is male.

The "White" Angel is not a platinum angle, just mostly white, but is a Veil Angel (white, orange & black)

Secondly, I noticed yesterday that the "white" angel is definately large in the belly. I would suspect that she is ready to lay very shortly. I must agree with that the Black is potentially a mating pair with the white.

Lastly, the white Angel has started to pick on the silver, but ONLY when she is being actively hurassed by the black.

Oh yeah, yesterday I added a lot of plants to the tank from QT and rearranged a large wood formation. The end result is that I know have a 1/3 of the tank more-or-less blocked off from any los from the rest of the tank. Will be interesting how this affects them!

good luck, very informative.

this sounds like pair forming up

the tank is pretty large so the 3rd wheel out may be ok..but keep a watchful eye out..the agression of angels..especially towards other angels can get UGLY.
