Angel juvies sick/ Help!!

Hi All,

We have a 55 gallon bare bottom tank that we transfered around 100 juvies pea size Angels. My problem is the fish appear to have internal bleeding and a few are very weak and laying on their sides on the bottom of the tank. We checked parameters and the readings are 0-NH3/NH4,0 -NO2,10-NO3 ppm,the temp is 82-84 degrees F and the PH is 7.2. I suspect it is a Bacterial infection and have treated the tank with Maracyn-Two. I don't understand how they contracted this because we do daily 25% WC and remove all un eaten food 30 min after feeding, unless it was from the frozen BBS. In the past ten years of raising FW Angels this is a first we have been very cautious to quarantine for a min of 30 days before introducing new tank mates and also each tank has its own siphon,nets and specimen containers. We also cautious when putting our hands in tanks we use a sanitizer when ever we have to put our hands in our tanks. We would appreciate any help you all can give us one this subject.

I have seen this happen before.

were these transfers from a breeding tank to a grow out tank?
or are these from a different source?(other breeder)

Star, we transfered juvies from our fry tanks to one of the grow out 55's. We have lost about 80 fish to date. Strange thing happened to one of the sick juvies,I found the fish laying on its side at the bottom of the tank, so I netted it out and put it in one of our empty 10's we had set up for fry,and to my surprise the fish is doing well without meds. I plan on keeping an eye on it and will not put any other fish in the tank until I am certain it is healthy.I believe I read somewhere that frozen BBS can lead to this type of Bacterial infection. I hope I have diagnosed this issue properly.

It's a sad day in Pop's fish room.

Pops I had the same problem with freeswimmers..I fed FBBS and they started to die off..
I was able to save about a dozen when I did a larger water change and hatched out my own bbs.

you may be on to something with fbbs
 
Star, I will not use frozen BBS anymore!! I will just keep our BS going 5 days a week in order to keep up. I have been doing alittle homework on frozen BBS and I discovered that this is not an isolated situation. I found a dry alternative at Angels Plus and we will give it a shot. All the fish we lost were pea to dime size and I just wanted to give them a treat and look what happened. lesson learned it's all part of the hobby.

decapsulated brine shrimp eggs??

they do well in a pinch tho I suspect the lil angels prefer the hunt of the bbs
you are correct..I suspect that the bbs (frozen0 either have been subjected to some sort of preservative or something happens in packaging. or simply the bbs are bad/spoiled
 
I was told by the Manufacture of the frozen BBS they they do not add anything to the BBS and that they are rinsed and then flash frozen.They also stated that their product could with stand two thaw and refreeze cycles. How is this possible with out the use of preservatives? Thanks for the decapsulated egg idea, I had looked into using them awhile back but never did. I am also looking for some suggestions for growth flakes or any other high protein food.

i came across a link somewhere when looking up instant bbs and decapsulated bbs. . . the guy said he fed the decapped bbs to his angel fry and then actually put some of their feces under his microscope - he could clearly see that most of it was either partially digested or not digested at all. just based on that i decided to avoid the decapped bbs - what's the point of feeding if the fish can't digest it? i still may try the instant bbs that comes in a jar, but it's $$$ and it only lasts 6 weeks after you open it.

Strange. There could also be the possibilities of more than several freeze/thaw cycles, depending on how things were handled in distribution. Our local big box stores suffer the same power losses here that can be long and more than once I have seen them empty their frozen food case and throw out the goods.
