I have a 55 gal tank I am going to make an Angel tank.

I have a Penguin 350 filter and an Emporer 400. The tank is moderately planted (plastic), and has a couple of pieces of driftwood. The tank was previously a cichlid tank, I have about 50 pounds of lava rock that I haven't added.

It is my first time with angels, and would like some feedback on how many I should add, as well as what type of Angels are easiest to keep. I am currently cycling the tank (fishless if your counting) and won't be adding fish for at least a month, maybe longer. I just filled the tank last night and will begin adding ammonia tonight.

I too am getting into Angels, link is the 58Gallon in my sig.

I have fake plants too right now but once I upgrade my light I am going to plant lots of low light vertical plants like swords and apongos. I hear angels really like real vs. fake. Also, I say driftwood driftwood driftwood, I don't think they care for rock at all.

In a 55 I think you could get about 4 Juvis and hope you get a pair that will mate. It is nigh impossible to sex juvi angels so it is luck of the draw. I will only have one because it came with the tank and is already palm sized, if I added more now their would probably be aggression issues. As far as type I think any ones you can find in common trade would be ok, there is one type to steer clear of but I think they are very hard to find and I don't remember the name. Just get ones you like: golden, marbel, koi, black, silver, blue diamond, etc.

Tankmates: Cories would be great for bottom fish 4-8; also a shoal of tetra, something bigger than an angels mouth so no neons or cardinals. I am going to have Rummynose in mine. And maybe a pleco.

If you only end up with 1-2 angels you could do a set of rams or apistos, or maybe gourami, I am not to sure on that compatability though.

There are some expert angel keepers around so I am sure you will get more advice.
 
the number of angels you can place in a 55 will be dependent on pairs forming. a 55 can house 2 pairs ..if pairs don;t form you may be able to have 5-6 angels.
but keep in mind that the more you add the greater the chance of pairs forming.
 
Are you trying to breed or just for show?

We currently use 55 gallon tanks to house up to 10 YA Pre breeders, keep in mind that we are using bare bottom tanks for this purpose. When they pair up we transfer them to a 20H and that where they remain. When trying for pairs it is recommend to purchase at least 6 to ensure a pair will form but we have had 3 pairs form from 6 fish, it's basically the luck of the draw. I agree with STAR when he states that 5-6 can be housed in a normal tank with plants etc.;
I would not recommend DD Blacks for a beginner, they can be difficult to care for if you are not a seasoned Angel person. I would recommend starting with a Gold or Gold Marble they are relatively ease to breed and care for. You should try and find a reputable Breeder in your area and purchase your fish there,buying from your LFS could spell disaster. If you choose the LFS, be sure to observe and ask questions like; How long have you had these fish? How many have perished? What are the water parameters they are housed in. I could go on and on but I just do not want you to learn the way I did. Here are two good sources on the Net.

Also, to this point I have only used plastic plants. My friend and occasional co- conspirator ZSandman has inspired me to switch to real plants, as Angels like these best he states. Can anyone post links to helpful information to make the transition smoothly??? Which plants are best suited for angels??? Etc.

i disagree about 4 or more in a 55. that's what i started with, and even though the tank had lots of hiding places and tall plants, they still started to beat on each other as they reached adult size. their pectoral fins were shredded and they would have visible scratches on their bodies. when i got my 150 they were moved into it, but even now they still flare at/fight with each other occasionally. i think i either have two males and a lesbian 'couple', or three males and one female. the two larger males fight with each other more than the other two fight with them. the other two are usually close to each other, but i've never had eggs or seen them defending a territory.

if all i had was the 55 and i could do it over again, i would get just one angel.
