A friend of mine has a red belly paco and she wants to put an angle with it in a 30 gal set up. I did not know what to tell her. Any thoughts would be great.

Tell her to get rid of the pacu if she's not planning on a 300gal+ setup in the future. For now though, I don't think pacu are particularly aggressive and would do ok with an angel, but that tank's not going to suffice for long.

How big do they get?

24-30" and very thick-bodied.

Big! Like 3 feet!

I made the mistake of buying two for my 100 gallon aquarium about 5 years ago. They were 3 inches when I got them and they grew to 14 inches within the first year. I really wish they would stop selling these guys in pet stores. I think Petsmart says they only get 18 inches which is a joke. Like sploke said, you need a HUGE tank for them when they are adults.

wow! Ill let her know. Thanks

I bought them by mistake as well when I was new to fish. Managed to grow them from 2 inches to 12-14. Looks are so deceiving.:shakehead:

Pacu's are actually very peaceful and playful fish. If you have a large enough tank they are fun fish. They would out grow a 30 gal in about 1 month though they grow extremely fast in their first year. They are very capable of breaking the glass of a smaller tank too so beware.

I had one in a 240 that grew to ~20 inches that was housed with a couple angels, with no problems at all. I eventually gave him away to a LFS with an 800 gal tank that he could be happy in. They are very aggressive eaters which can be the tricky part when trying to give the other fish in your tank the chance to eat.

Red bellies rarely get bigger than 24 inches in captivity. Their cousin's the Black Pacu will reach 35+ inches. But get that pacu out of the 30 gallon ASAP.
