Angelfish, Convicts Next to Get Glo Genes

I actually find the idea of patenting living creatures more disturbing than anything else. What's to stop people from giving their fry away, and only charging for "shipping & handling"?

Do the glo fish fry carry on the same coloring genes?

I imagine if a green and an orange bred with any positive result we would see said result on the market.

Either they go wild-type or take on one or the other.

I love Danios and their many relatives. I do have glofish but I think they're ugly too (compared to wild ones). I got them to try and get my wife on board with my aquarium hobby- plus they went well with the Danios I already planned on getting.

Note- the glo fish tend to suffer more from tumors (non fatal)- 2 or 3 of my glofish have swollen misshaped bellies. This is probably more to do with being inbred, than having glo genes though.

I personally won't be getting more glofish when they complete their normal lives... there again, I'll probably move onto a different species for all my danio when they die... even though I do love danios.

The altered angel fish and convicts I find less attractive than their wild counterparts too.

no no nONONONONO why do they have to modifi fishies genes?!?!? there already pretty and amazy the wy thy are now!GRAH

From what I understand, yes, they do have fry that glo as well. I don't know what happens if you breed, say, a green with an orange, though. :eek3:

Yes, there is not an anti- glow gene so it will always be passed on. If you were to breed a green with an orange, some of the fry would be green, others orange and some would be a mix of both. This will also happen with other combinations including GloFish with normal zebra danios.

I don't see it as cruel. The genetic altering I see as cruel are those balloon mollies that can't seem to swim or in dogs, English Bulldogs that have all kinds of problems from hip issues to respiratory problems because the way they have been bred for "the look".

I don't see why people freak out. Yes, it's not natural, but it's not unhealthy. They didn't even modify the genes, depending on how you look at it, they jsut add a jellyfish/coral gene. It makes them flourescent and depending on how you look at it, 'pretty'. I think they're sin-ugly personally, but a lot of people like them. This si not cruel to the fish though. I do disagree with tattoo/painted fish though...

i want neon pink and lime green angel fish that would be so wicked....
