another peacock gudgeon breeding journal

Thanks Fishorama! :)

lol it could be. My LFS was quite impressed to hear that i have fry only after having my male for less than a month. They spawned 3 days after I bought him!

My male continues to breed with both females basically every 3-4 days. I'm getting more eggs each time and I have ~80 or so free swimmers now.

You should make your own thread about yours. =P

eh, I'm lazy. I'll post pics when they are older though. :)
Lol, I don't think the point of Ash's breeding journal is to chronicle your experiences with gudgeons. Creating your own breeding journal is no more work than posting in hers, and is proper netiquette. :thm:

The fry are growing and eating nicely. The second spawn hatched and has joined the other fry also. It's hard to get pics while they are still so tiny..even though they are DEF bigger than they were. So, I made a video. There are lots of diatoms and my camera is crappy, but you can still see the fry. You can see how some are bigger now and the smaller ones are from the latest hatch. :)

I don't know how you managed to get pics like you did. They're so hard to see! Not just because they're so tiny but because they're laid inside a dark pvc tube. I have a hard enough time seeing them with my own eyes.

I don't think I'll be able to trade any with you this time because I think I only have 4 this time. I'm glad I have any to tell the truth. I'll try breeding again in about a month or two and hopefully my numbers will be more successful. I think I'll also get another female since that configuration worked so well for you.

How long did it take yours to go from just hatched to free swimming?

I think it took them maybe 3 days. I am not positive on that, but it seems like it took around that long before they really started swimming. I am glad you have the 4 though. I hope they make it. I am sure yours will breed more again. I think the 2 females to 1 male really does seem to work. Each time I pull one tube the alternate female is ready to go again. As far as getting pics, it is tough, I just play with camera settings and lighting, and luckily I have a macro setting and a flash lol.

Thanks Lab! They are def growing. I can tell the difference between the ones just hatched and the ones from the first spawn. :)

Well, as teh diatoms are growing, so are the gudgeon fry. They are getting bigger and starting to look more like fish than eyelashes. They are still eating lots of fry food and live food, and doing well.
While walking by my 20g today I saw some danio fry (choprai/glowlights), and it's unusual for them to survive long enough to be visable, especially with 20 adult danios and a hungry betta to contend with, so I pulled some of those to the fry tank as well and made a video of both. At the beginning of the video you can see the danio fry that are a good bit bigger than the gudgeons and already tinted orange with little orange eyes. Then the ones staying toward the bottom of the tank (with all the nasty looking diatoms) are the gudgeons. :)
