I just picked up my special order of 8 of these little guys yesterday. I have them in QT, with some simple gravel substrate and a couple fake plants, as they really like to hide, but there is enough visibility so I can observe, if I hide...LOL. According to the supplier, they are captive bred, all look healthy and they are colorful and active. I am hoping to breed them if all goes well.

Anyway, I have been unsuccessful in my attempt to feed them. I know they have tiny mouths, and may not be able to eat whole brine shrimp(frozen), so I gave the shrimp a good chopping with a razor. The fish would approach the area where the shrimp had fallen, as if they smelled something good, but none of them seemed to want to eat. I crushed up some betta pellets, also, and no luck. I have been unable to find Hikari micro pellets, I may have to order them. So I just siphoned out all the uneaten food, don't want to funk up the water.

Should I go buy some bloodworms? Or would you suggest flake?

Thanks in advance, guys.

I fed mine Ocean Nutrition Brine Shrimp Flakes crushed, and shaved off frozen bloodworms about every other day, and live microworms and they ate and spawned, and spawned, and spawned! Once the babies were big enough to not need Hikari First Bites, they'd start on flakes too. I tried frozen brine shrimp too and they stuck their noses up at it.

Mine love tetra flakes and any other dry foor that is small enough. I must add though that they are very shy and mine will not eat if I am watching.

Those are great suggestions, thank you! Are the live micro worms something you have to raise yourself? I will try some flakes in a little while, and pick up some bloodworms later on today. thanks again.

I bought a culture from harleyhoney who is a member here. They are very little work to keep, kept in a tupperware container with oatmeal and yeast. And a culture could last you forever if you don't let it go bad. You make a new culture every 3 weeks or so and discard the old one. All my small fish love the microworms, even the sids.

Yours might not be eating just because they are still adjusting to their new surroundings. ALl the above suggestions are great. Mine adore microworms, crushed flake, bloodworms, and daphnia.

yeah, I bet they still need some time to adjust. I sprinkled in a tiny pinch of crushed flake, and they def. seemed interested, but now I will just lay off for a while, and pick up some bloodworms later. Meanwhile, I'll send harleyhoney a PM.

How long will it take for a fish to starve itself?

They won't starve themselves! They also will not come out to eat if they see you there. The fry are not shy at all, but those adults.....hide, hide, hide.

hehe, yea.....I've been keeping at least a 6 foot distance after feeding.....

When I kept CPDs, mine were able to eat New Life Spectrum small fish formula pellets. Some of mine ended up being outcompeted for food though, and my population slowly dwindled. I definitely learned my lesson about this species and IMO they are more suited to smaller and/or species tanks. Just thought I'd throw that out there, best of luck with yours! :)
