I don't recommend breeding tetras as your first fish. You'll be giving up quickly on breeding if you do. Z-man is VERY accomplished as a breeder goes and if he hasn't bred tetras yet I wouldn't even try them with at least a fair share of experience. Tetras are alot of effort to breed, you may want to try your hand at something a little more in your league .Jumping into the deep end before you learn to swim is not a good idea. It will discourage you and without the experience you're not very likely to really get anywhere.
It's alot harder than it sounds.

If you want a surefire breeder go with Convicts....they are a no brainer.

In two years experience, orange marking mean males, no orange means females. Get one of each (makes no difference on their relative size) and put a large rock or clay pot in the tank. In my experience it takes about a week to get eggs from them. DO NOT put any other fish in the tank with them. if they don't kill them, the parents will at the least raise mortal hell in the tank.

Although not as uncommon, Convicts are by far and away the easiest fish to breed.
