Thanks for the advice but I have tried situating that thing every way I can think of and it helps with vibration noise but not the noise coming from the inside where the impeller is at. One thing that helps to make it just a little quieter is taking the lid off. That Vaseline thing sounds like a good idea and I have thought of doing that but is that safe to use in an aquarium, will it cause any bad side effects?

I recently got a tank of craigslist that came with two Aquaclear 70s and they are both noisy. 
One is noisy-er than the other and it is driving me crazy. I am following this thread like a hawk. I just want a nice quiet tank already. What makes me crazier is one day they were both silent! And then suddenly back to noisy. So I know it's possible for them to be quiet, I just can't figure out how to get them to stay that way.
Edit: I'd love to get a new impeller but obviously I have no receipt since I got it second hand... might they still help me out?

I have 23 or 24 AquaClears in current use. The first was put into service over 8 years ago and the most recent in the past 2 weeks. They range in size from the 100gph Mini to the 300gph 70.
Normally these filters have run pretty quiet. The "buzzing" noise is typically not caused by an inpeller issue, but rather by the lid vibrating. This has been a problem on an off over the years. In the past the occasionally noisey one that didn't settle down could be hushed by putting something on the lid- like a small rock etc.
However, over the past year or so every new AC I have purchased has made the noise and no amount of weight works this time around. I can also say that it is my impression that something has changed in terms of the plastic housing/lids themselves. I can't quite put my finger on it- the plastic seems thinner, more rigid and generallty of a lesser quality and fit. The only reason I have not returned the two noisey ones I have is that they are on tanks in a fish space in our storeroom where the noise is not a problem.
Fortunately I do not anticipate having to add any more ACs, especially since they are now, imo, an overpriced filter whereas for years they had been one of the most economical and reliable.

I have had the exact same problem as the OP. Exactly. I have tried everything listed but no fix. then I found this thread and tried some more.
well today I tackled it again and here is what I did. The media basket was slightly not straight against the bottom, just a little. well i pushed it all down really compact so it was straight, the basket and each piece of media.
It ran quiet for about 30 minutes and now it is ratteling again. I think i am going to return mine and get something else... maye a canister. this filter is driving me crazy.

I purchased my two 70s about a year back. Each run quietly. My recently purchased 110 is very noisy. The dealer is sending out a new impeller. Hopefully this will clear the problem. I imagine the next step is to send it back.

I had the same problem with my 110. This is what I did and it worked...runs quiet and smooth. 1. Pull out the impeller and clean 2. Clean and rinse out the motor cavity to remove any sand or abrasive material. 3. Here is the remedy...apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly "Vaseline" on the magnet. The PJ acts as a cushion between the motor cavity and the magnet and reduces the vibration. If you turn on the motor and the motor wont turn you used too much PJ, wipe some off and retry until motor turns. Mine is nice and quiet and the small amount of PJ has not effected my fish in any way so far "2 weeks". Worth trying before you go out and buy new parts that may not resolve your problem. Im not sure why people have this problem.. did you fill up the filter with water before you turned it on? I just bought an ac110 and filled it with water, it syphoned and i havent heard it since. Amazing filter and way more quiet than my whisper filters.
all of my acs that make noise have a gouged up impeller magnet from sand i think. if you change the impeller Assembly it should take care of it, i would just return it for a new one. screw waiting for replacement parts from hagan, just get the new filter, keep your media if they will let you
