aquarium coffee table

If you wanted a coffee table, you'd probably be better off DIY'ing one, or using a rectangular tank with a box on one end to hide the filter etc. You'd still have a challenge lighting it and running electicity to it without tripping over wires.

You'd probably have to treat that thing like a giant goldfish bowl- no heater, filter, etc. Just don't kick it over!!!

This is a great idea; DIY a rectangular tank into a coffee table. If I had technical now-how that's what I'd do. ;)

Search for "aquarium coffee table" on ebay and you'll see a myriad of them, including plans to make one.

You'll even see the one in question here, on ebay. Maybe the seller will be able to answer the question of the viability of this as an aquarium better, and what equipment to use with it.. though I'd think the rectangular ones would be more practical. You may be able to contact the buyers via the seller's feedback to see how they feel about their purchase now and how well it's working.

imho, the theory is probably a lot more exciting than the reality. fish are more fun from the sides than from the top, and unless you plan very well with contrast, you're not going to see the fish from above the table. too dark, and too much effort to be bending down to look at them. plus it would take the fish a while to even stop hiding. from above you are much more threatening as a potential predator than you are from the side. from experience with a floor-level tank, the fish might recognize you and not hide, but every new person will cause them to play hide-n-seek.

I recommend getting 2 of these. I have 1 of the smaller ones as part of the filtration for my 20H and I really like it.

A coffee table/aquarium sounds like a fun and different idea, I would get top dwellers and gravel that will contrast with the color of the fish, so you can see them. I would set the table on a rug and put a hole in the rug somewhere so you can run your cords under it. I also would racommend that when cleaning you do extra cleaning in the gravel in the center because a lot of poop would accumulate there due to the shape.

Wow, some people just... well nevermind.

anyways, i think i'll go with a filter like this. this should do it just fine, and look good to.
Filter
lighting wont be a problem either. that will be hidden in a centerpiece, that will also add a decrotive touch to the tables top.

what is so hard about cleaning a tank like this as opposed to any othere???
just remove the top. BIG DEAL!

and i dont have kids or pets besides my fish, and i keep my place clean so dust wont affect this anymore then it would my other tanks.

thanks to those who did offer advice

how are you going to see the fish while the filter is running? with the current moving the surface everything will be viewed through ripples.

i also agree that condensation will be a big problem, unless you keep your house at tropical temps all the time.
