Aquarium Salt for new fish

I am receiving discus in the mail tomorrow. Interesting answers because so far the responses over at simplydiscus said use salt. Hmmm
 
Dkarc, why do you add salt?

Personally, I deal mostly with entire import shipments of discus coming from SG, HK, etc. I find that they acclimate and do best overall when salt is added in at say 0.5% salinity. Sometimes they have bad ammonia burns and ive always had their fins heal faster when salt is in the water (mostly to help deterr any kind of minor bacteria/fungal problems). The salt is only in the water for a few days at most, after that I treat with a more heavy duty treatment for external parasites like 35% hydrogen peroxide or similar. I have had shipments where ive used no salt at all and they do fine. But it is a personal choice to me and I feel they do that much better when some salt is added in. Whether it is a valid feeling or not, it works for me.

So, you are using the salt basically to help heal wounds, this is a medicinal treatment using salt, not just adding it to add it..

This is the reason I asked you for an explanation, knowing how well you know your stuff, I new that you had a good reason to do so. This goes in line with using it as a medicing, not just adding to add...
