Aquarium salt is useless unless treating for ick as already mentioned. Even brackish and marine fish don't need "aqaurium" salt, they need marine salt...Petsmart and Petco always have signs like that by some of their fish. It bothers me...
Their signs were bothering me too. I saw them on african and south american cichlids and thought that I knew better but I don't keep SA cichlids so wasn't sure. I have had some success with salt when I kept mollies but I had to tread lightly because I knew my cories couldn't handle much at all. As far as specific water for different fish, most of the big chain stores keep all of their fish in the same water because it saves them having to maintain individual filters. This means that their only real experience in the store is with something that almost everything can survive in long enough to sell them. They don't even try to optimize for each species. Look at the recommendations for an african cichlid, then for a discuss and you will see they can't possibly be serious about the store's experience with water conditions.
well we have a dwarf gourami we got from persmart, that claimed he needed aquarium salt, we do not use salt and trust me he is very healthy and colorful.
"I asked the girl that was working and she said, "oh yeah, you have to put aquarium salt into your freshwater aquarium to keep the fish healthy and to make them bright and colorful."
I was told the samething but they also said that I had to add after every water change. So I did what I was told thinking that I was helping my fish. Well after two months of doing it I have a RIP section in my sig:cry:
I talked to the nice people at aquaria central and they told me to stop using it. They saved my fishys! Thanks again guys!!!:headbang2:
if you do want to use salt make sure have a good test kit for it. at work we have to keep the salinity (using aq. salt not marine) at .20 so a lot of times the fish are used to having that salinity. if you do use salt its true that you would want to replace it after a water change, but only replace as much as needed to raise the salinity to your established lvl. (like, you would want to add "i think" 1 tbsp for a 5G tank, but you wouldnt want to add 1 tbsp when you do a 1G water change in that tank)
I don't even look at the signs anymore, except to see the name of a fish I don't know. When I got my first aquarium, I was hit hard by mis-information on the signs at the local big name pet store. So I don't pay any attention to them anymore.
