I bought a hood/florescent light from wal mart last week for my 10 gallon. A couple of days ago my light wouldn't turn on. Then it came on after about 15 min. It happened again yesterday. When i went to rearrange something in the tank when i touched the water it shocked me, like a really strong static shock. Problem is i threw away the box the hood came in and I lost the receipt. Do you think walmart will take this back? What should I do?

i'd take it back anyways, explain what happened. you got electrocuted by the **** thing so id say they have a good chance of doing an exchange. no harm in trying right?

edit: the suggestion above was an excellent one, haha.

I would write it up as a loss. I don't think there's any way walmart would take it back without the box AND receipt. The water holding current because however puzzles me though..... are you sure it's the light and not a heater? Is the hood touching the water at all?

you'd be surprised what wallmart will take back

i had a friend who bought those suround soud TV speakers and returned them 5 times after the time limit was up and every time they did it for him(he's a little anal about his speakers- i told him to buy them somewhere else after the 3rd set had problems)

although the first suggestion is a great one if you go in there with an attitude like this is not acceptable i demand it be replaced (in a respectfully insistent way) they'll exchange it for you.

tell them you threw away all the packageing before you set everything up and discovered this after box and reciept was buried in the dumpster.

they'll do it just don't leave until you've got what you want.

as a last resort you can use the first idea at a different walmart! he he

good luck

Go back to Wal-Mart, buy an identical hood. Then put the bad one in the new box and return with your new receipt!
This is the best idea, and its what I'm going to do. Thanks for the genius idea yucca patrol. By the way you like yuccas? i have them growing all in my yard.

The light is not touching the water, and it may not have been what shocked me,the heater is pretty new. However i am assuming it is the light since it is having electrical problems

I would be more inclined to suspect the heater or anything else that is in direct contact with the water, however, that said, if the light is malfunctioning as with the delay and all, I would go ahead and try to get a replacement on that "too".

Either way, you should verify that all of the items in the tank are working properly--the potential harm from a device shorting out in the tank shouldn't be underestimated.

A static shock isn't the same as an electrical AC current shock. You can get an ESD zap by shuffling your stocking feet across the carpet then slowly putting your finger close to the surface of the water.... if not barely touching it. If you got an AC or DC voltage shock, it would be continuous and a tingly feeling until you removed your hand from the water. Sounds like you just got an ESD zap...same as touching a car door or door knob.

Where do you live? Is it very cold outside and low humidity inside your house?
