I want to put sand in my new tank, but finding the right sand is driving me crazy. I don't want black or white sand, I want a natural looking sand. I can find Estes sand online, but I hate to pay a shipping charge. I found a caribsea aragonite sand at petsmart that says it cis good for cichlids or marine use, so I assume it can be for any freshwater as well? Would this be a good choice or is there an issue here I don't know about?

If you are looking for some "natural" sand try pool filter...check your local pool/spa place, its pretty cheap.

I believe argonite can have some pretty rough edges. So it depends on what is going in the tank...But I may be wrong...also remember that it will mess with your pH.

Aragonite is good for cichlids and marine animals, cause it will raise and buffer the pH into the 8.0+ ranges. The petsmart guy should have mentioned rift lake cichlids, the sort that like the water very hard and 8.0 pH, the sand is not at all for freshwater animals.

so pool filter sand will be a beige color with color variations? Something nice and natural looking is what I like.

I have pool sand in 2 tanks. in 1 it is almost white, the other is a multicolor tan. Shop around, even just call, stores often know the color of what they sell.

Aragonite is only good for 'some' cichlids and fish-those that usually need higher pH.
pool filter sand seems to be the norm and quite a few use playsand.

I hear pool filter sand being recommended a lot, but I personally find that its too *light*. Regular play sand looks the most natural in my opinion, but it really varies from store to store.
