Arapaima Pond Build

Wow, been a long time since I have seen the treads about mr T. Last I saw he was still in the temp pond at your factory being fed by your cleaning lady.

That is an AMAZING set up Luc! If only my aunt and uncle were moving to thailand instead of whatever country they are moving to.

Cant wait to see it "finished" even though something like this is never finished, always little things to improve it.

That's quite some weeks ago. He moved somewhere end april I think, have to look it up.
We're putting some pressure on finishing everything, end of July is planned for a buddhist ceremony at the factory again, so there's a nice opportunity for food, some drinks and celebrating a finished pond. Lots of things to do still.

Drained and cleaned the tank up to where the bottom connects to the side-walls.
There's some thinking to do on what to use to close the gaps. Can go with silicone again, but I'm leaning a bit to epoxy to be fool-proof.
More work, but sure stronger. Need to go bank in the afternoon, so might as well go Home-Pro and check it out.

Sure looking forward to see how the water is tomorrow morning. Then start hammering that second bog in.

Cheers,
Luc

It's not like I forgot you guys, no worries, only a bit late.
Pictures tomorrow I guess, but added bonus a close-up video of Mr. T, exploring the camera. And it really shows how clean the water is, still green tint, but hardly any solids floating around.
Water was amazing clean this morning, but I expect it will not stay like this for the time being.

At least, the water smells good, looks good and Mr. T is happy. Could see all the smaller fish shooting around, they are still in the dozens, so that's a good sign.
Cleaning lady won again today in the lottery, so he's getting prawns next week. Gonna love it....sure.

Second bog we've come quite a way. Sand and steel is all done. Some steps build in for plants, using steel to keep the sand in place. From the 5 cbm I ordered, there is not much left, maybe 1, 1.5 cbm. Now hoping for some good rain to compact it
Next will be the liner. Size at 2 x 2.5 meter for both the bog and grow-out pond. Bog at 45 cm deep, grow-out at 80 cm. plenty of space to put lots of big plants in there and grow out lots of fish together.

Settling tank cleaned, silicone off, then filled all the seams and nails with epoxy filler.
Now drying, Monday filling it up and see if that's it. Pretty sure it will be ok, the epoxy is water proof and hardened out pretty fast. Totally cured in 72 hours it said, so Monday should do for a test fill.

Funny thing when I emptied the tank, at least 10 fish, size 1 inch and above came out.
Reminded me to empty and clean these tanks on a regular basis just to check what's in there.

Oh, one more...grrrr. Came in this morning, pond dropped about 3cm overnight, enough for even the cleaning lady to notice it.
Worried and checking and everything, can't find anything.
Afternoon, walking around the pond, found one of the drains not fully closed. Closing those valves, the last bit feels like a notch or click to fully close them. This on was not fully closed. Hoping that that's the issue...will follow up on this coming Monday.

Pictures and video soon.

Cheers,
Luc

The Bull Pen....lol.
Liner will cover all of it, still some nylon underlayer to go in before that.
Liner will be dark again, with the steps in front of it filled with stones, similar to the first bog.
Shows a good overview of size for both bog and grow-out.

That's how Mr. T. normally starts looking at you when you get closer to the pond.

And growth progress picture of the first bog.

Cool! Those pics are really nice looking, what camera do you have?

Olympus Though TG310
Had to choose between a PowerShot and this one. Picture quality of the PS is superior, but this one is water and shockproof.
Easy choice in Thailand, kids, fish, flooding, pond etc.

As I thought, water did not stay as clear. Might change a bit with sunshine on it, but it will be waiting for a couple of weeks for the bog to really catch on and the second one being in place. Busy couple of Saturdays to get it all finished. End of July target. Much easier than the first one with the learning-experience from it. Filling up with stones and washing it into the grow-out pond, then pump out the water and redo the process until it's clean.

Good news is that the 2nd Settling tank is ok now. Cleaned out the water and rubbish, filled it up and running it again. Nice and dry around the seams. Filling up the pond to the max to see how it holds up. Want to get it to the overflow-pipe and then check again over the course of this week on how much it drops p/day.

Mr. T. his usual self. Seems to be going after small fry now, leaving the Tilapia alone completely. Too fast for him. Fry just hovers against the water-flow, much easier snacks. lol.

Water is level and stays where it is. Curious to see if any loss tomorrow, if not, then repairing the 2nd tank really paid off.
Tried some back washing today, couldn't go full out on it with fish in it, but it does loosen up rubbish.
Waiting for the grow-out tank on Saturday, then maybe relocate the fish, fill up the last corner and backwash/drain the bog, refill and drain...repeat a couple of times to see how that helps...

Happy camper for now....

Cheers,
Luc
