Are fish pets or a hobby?

I have to agree with Kas as well, I observe behaviors of my fish being happy, playing chase, exploring the plants, etc. I spoke to someone before at a reptile & invertebrate shop that said reptiles, fish & inverts didn't feel pain or emotions at all. He also thought of them as conversation pieces/ decor' and shouldn't ever be handled. Excuse me, but what a pompus-***! He shouldn't even be working there.
I even have a gecko, she shows when she's not feeling well, or if she's excited about hunting her live crickets.
She even is a bit curious of new things in or outside of her terrarium. I believe every creature, big and small, invert or not, have a mind and their own individualities.
I've seen the snails in my tank bully eachother, ride eacothers' back, and walk upside down on the top of the water to get food. I don't think it's the size of the brain counts, it's all about how it's used. In light of many creatures' small stature, they can certainly make up for with their crafty-ness IMO.

:The hobby of keeping fish is addictive. But it doesn't take much to become obsessed with your pet fish. 
I agree with what was said above. I name each and every one of my fish based mostly on their personalities. My Bettas even recognize me and always rush to greet me.

Can I say neither and call them part of my family?? I donno - I love my fish everybit as much as I love my cats, if not a tad more, but only because I enjoy watching them so much, whereas cats sleep all day (not that exciting to watch lol). I name them all, so I think that qualifies as them being a pet, but I worry about getting every detail right, as someone said earlier, to give them the best life possible. I dont always get it bang on, but im always striving to do better, so I think thats where the hobby part comes in. The obsession part comes to play when we just bought our first car (just did tonite) and all I can think about is - woohhoooo!! Now we can go pick up a bigger tank!!!! lol - my husband thinks im nutty - but I think hes going to let me get it so I shut up for a couple of months about new bigger tanks lol. He thought it would end when I got my first betta the other day !!! WRONG !! Just made it a whole lot more of a reason to get another aquarium. :devil:
