I recently brought 7 yellow labs, however, some of them have one eggspot, is this normal? I was going through some old threads and one poster said they have never seen an eggspot on a yellow lab.

Also, 1 or 2 of the yellow labs do not have the black on it's fins, is this normal? The shape and everything shows that it is a yellow lab though, and they all shoal sometimes.

Maybe they are not pure bred?

Here is a male, notice the black trim on the dorsal fin, and some black on the pelvic fins. first pic is when he was younger. one egg spot...:)

When the male yellow labs are content and happy they will usually only show black on their dorsal and pelvic fins. But if irrated or stressed they will show all black on their dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins.

And I also agree with JL, it is common for male yellows to have one egg spot (but that is all they have).:)

I updated my thread, it has a few pictures.

Some have little to no black to them yet they have an eggspot. Are these also males?

I am afraid I have more males then females, (no good) I was wondering if I can wait for them to breed, raise the frys and correct the ratio using the fry? They are around 2 inches right now, are they ready to breed?

That is an awesome looking tank....and yes, yellows can breed at 2 inches. Can you figure out how many of your yellows actually have an egg spot? And are the dorsal fins rounded or pointed on them? Females will have a rounded dorsal fin, while the males have pointed...

Doh!! Thank you! I don't know what I was thinking, not posting the link :thm:

Well, its very weird, some has a pointy dorsal fin with no egg spots, while some have rounded dorsal fins with egg spots, some look very skinny, some have black on thier fins yet they have rounded dorsal fins with no eggspot, and one isn't very yellow, beige-ish yellow.

In other words: I have a total of I think 4 with eggspots, but not all of them have black or a pointed dorsal fin.

But one is exceptionally nice looking, very yellow, fat, has some black on it, with one egg spot, it is also the largest, I'm guessing hes the alpha male.

Its drivin me nuts i tell ya.
