OMG, 33 pages later im done.

That out of the way i have to say after reading everything in this thread, im more convinced that i should do water changes on a "regular" basis. "Regular" being a routine i come up with observing my tanks, will this "regular" change be the same as everyone?... No, its going to be based on my tank/stock/plants/feeding schedule. I have 2 tanks currently and i dont change them on the same routine as their levels of stock/plants/feeding differ.

I have good valid reasons for not changing my water daily : 1 it comes from a river that i saw a dumpster in, 2 its the scukill and delaware rivers, 3 i saw a 3 eyed fish in the scukill dont want one in my tanks. Other then that i have no qualms with water changes.

Just had an idea: can someone re-name this thread "Water Changes- Why and How Much" Just a good name to help the newbs who never had a tank b4 or the people what are wondering why their kids goldfish keeps dyeing.

I am sorry FishFriend, that you have bad water out of your tap. Do you only drink bottled? Because an RO unit would be less expensive than drinking bottled all the time, and you could use that water for doing W/Cs in your aquariums.

That said, your situation is not the norm. The U.S. has fairly good drinking water quality overall, if you don't count stuff like residual pharmaceuticals which cannot be filtered out via normal means. However on the whole, water changes are beneficial for your fish and an average FW tank can use the water right out of the tap.

(After being dechlorinated, of course)

If there's a problem with your source water then you should find a way around that to do water changes. Otherwise there's no reason not to.
