AREN'T ASIAN AROWANAS ILLEGAL?!?

Arent they leagal to sell if, A)You already had one or more when they were banned, B) They were born and raised here? I have heard of one selling for over $800.

I take it you've never owned one;)

You got me there :) I used to know a few arowana owners and they (the fish, not the owners) looked quite inactive most of the time, just swimming back and forth in their tanks. That was before I knew anything about fish though.

Read this on Wiki.

Other nations restrict or prohibit possession of Asian arowanas; for example, the United States has listed this species under the Endangered Species Act, and therefore it cannot be possessed in that country without a permit.

The south American Arowana is also endangered. I don't know about the Austrailian one though.

Piranhas are legal in some states like here though. Pehaps because they would not survive low temperature during winter time.

I used to think that... Until I saw pictures of a 13" RB Piranha pulled out of Baldwin Lake (Randolph county, IL - it's a lake heated year-'round by a coal burning power plant). That lake has an overflow into the Kaskaskia river, so it's possible that one could get into the river and head south. That's all we need - New Orleans tourists killed by Piranhas during Mardi Gras...

It's such a bummer that theres all these irresponcible people out there dumping unwanted fish into rivers.Luckily I live in Canada so theres no problem with pirahnas up here.:)

Near me in Asheville NC there is a similar powerplant/heated lake thing. . . .stocked with tilapia. I don't know if i would eat it though.

No...not even legal to possess.

I have heard of one selling for over $800.

Good quality babies of good shape and colouration regularly sell for $4000-$10,000.
