Assassin Snails Are Killers...

BUT . . . . this is the sad part. Anyone new to the hobby that "googles" Anentome Helena or Assassin snails will get this thread. LOL!
So will anyone looking for stories about Prof. Lupin from Harry Potter cross-dressing as a ballerina for that matter.

It's already been mentioned in a few LJ fish/aquatics communities lol
(and depending on your search settings, the #1 result on google)

It's great, there's a few interesting debates going back and forth and then an army of people getting upset of the lack of coverage on someone's death and the lack of caring. Like good internet crazy upset haha

That was kind of the point to see how far it would go and if it would spread. I would love those links...

A lot of people jump to conclusions and if the writer, which was me by the way eggs it on, then things that are rumours can become gossip and someone out there will believe it. That is why sometimes we need to be more careful about what we say in this hobby.

TMU News = Totally Made Up News
Hans = Totally made up no referecnce to any person alive or dead
Faketun River
Then the Seantor from Guam comments = Okay I could see her saying that but she didn't
Spelling and Grammer = Redneck
All the info lost when his notebook fell in with him

Plus I had more fun watching the reactions to this.:evil_lol:

I have heard some weird reports lately by people who don't even bother to try and know the truth like:

Assassins wiping out entire colonies of shrimp, one was over night...
Assassins killing someones fish all of them

and so on.

Problem is one person makes a claim with no proof just a jumped to conclusion and I have to deal with it when selling Assassins or answering peoples questions. Not that I really mind, but what is maddening is when you give the person all the info you have colleceted and explain it to them they still decide to believe some half cocked story.

This board is really good about calling Bull quickly so that was why I posted it here to see how many pages before it got to the point that I just couldn't take it anymore (laughing too much or the comments were getting way out there). I could see some boards would be calling for a state funeral for poor Hans and an erradication of all assassin snails.:headshake2:

All in all this board is real good about making sure the info can be backed up or playing doubting thomas, so I applaude you there...

All in all a good chuckle on my end at least....:)

Here's the LJ community:

Here's the other LJ community:

I believe you'll need an account to view the communities and need to join the communities to view the threads. People like to friends lock their entries on LJ a lot. Don't know about that though, never really viewed LJ expect when I'm logged in, heh.

Edit: Yea, you'll need an account and membership, only the public entries show up for those not logged in.

And here's your #1 Google standing, congratulations!:

Definitely. And any little bit of validation only fuels it, even if it's not really relevant. I was watching people take that name and run with it because it popped results on google as a legitimate name. (Of course, does anybody note that the results are a kid in Chile and German chemist that's long since dead? lol) And then all the websites that list "reports" of shrimp and fish attacks became more ammo for them.

On the more interesting side, a bunch of people were debating species with newly discovered toxins/venoms/etc and previously unreported behaviors that had now been confirmed and documented. It made for a lot of interesting side line conversations. Hell, even got me wondering if somewhere in this whole mess someone somewhere had really had an adverse reaction (like allergic reaction) to something on the snails that just didn't affect most people. But, uh, seems mostly what you did was cause a whole bunch of people to go "Oh Noes! OMG!?!!1 My snails are dangerous?!" over on LJ, haha. (I wonder, did this make it over to MFK?)

I have heard some weird reports lately by people who don't even bother to try and know the truth like:

I thought attacks on shrimp were verified? Not whole colonies overnight, I mean, but attacks on individuals in some cases. Or was that one just hype, too?

Heh, I get that with the crayfish I sell. People run with the generic or commonly spread information, whether it's truly applicable, right or wrong, rather than taking factual information. The curse of the internet, they can do a search and pop up with however many sources that seem to link together and that trumps your one statement. *shrugs* At the very least, you had fun with this lol... I hope you make it to Snopes.com, it'd be officially epic then. :silly:

Do you think it would be wise to go back and edit the first post with a disclaimer, now that the jig is up?

Kristina

Attacks on shrimp are verified but not taking down a whole colony. Shrimp will outbreed what Assassins eat 1000 to 1. I have kept 80+ assassins in with less than 100 shrimp and had no losses even though the assassins were only fed every other week or so. Most cases are starved snails after transport or not being fed live foods at the shippers end. The other reports are dumb shrimp syndrome stupid shrimp at the wrong place wrong time.

Can't go back and edit it and if someone doesn't read the whole thread well then they really need to learn to research better :evil_lol:

Thanks for the LJ links but I think I will pass on a membership....:evil_lol:
