So I checked out all the places I could possibly get fish here in town... superpet and two LFS... unfortunately, all three places only have tanks of 'assorted african cichlids'. Except for superpet, which actually had a separate tank for frontosas. So what should a poor cichlid newbie do? Does assorted neccessarily mean hybrid(which I don't want)... should I order on line? The next closest place I could go would be either 6 hours drive to one place, are there issues with bringing fish across the canadian/american border? or 8 to another...

i dont think that assorted means hybrid. Its just a tank of assorted Africans...

and also, to help you out a little more... what type of African Cichlid are you looking for? From wich lake? Most of the "Assorted Africans" are usually mbunas from Malawi. Is that what your looking for? Im a little confused on the qestion......

I'm looking for mbunas from malawi... so 'assorted' isn't necessarily a bad thing? The people in the petstores didn't know what they were other than what was written on the tank.

bring a book and try to ID them when you're there. If they are young most will be different colorations until they mature.

no, assorted isn't a bad thing. and yea, most of your basic pet stores dont know anything about the fish they sell.. ;) I think you should do a little research and find out what you like, and see if they cary it. If you like more common mbunas, then i can almost guarntee that the petstores have them. Just do a little googling, im sure you'll find what you want... ;)

as for age there's basically two categories. There are tanks of fish that are tiny... 1 inch or so and then there are tanks of 5-6 inch fish. The price difference 9.99 for the little ones and 29.99 for the big ones.

well your going to want to get the fish all around the same size.. you dont want the bigger guys picking on the littler ones... ;)
but like i said, find out what spieces you want, and then see what your store has... OR... .. i guess you could always take some pics of what your store has, then reasearch what type of fish that is, and see if its something that you would want...(but remember, when they are younger, they have less color)
Either way, your going to want to do some reasearch. ;)
and dont forget.. mbunas are 'rock fish' so your going to need to provide plenty of rock work for shelter and water hardness.

also... what size tank do you have?

The mixed groups can make for an active tank, though you may have to move them around as they grow.

I have a 55 gallon.
