I wanted to add, if you DO go the bomb route....cover your tanks with sheets being sure the filter is covered also, then replace the filters. I had to bomb years ago and that is what I did...didn't loose any fish.
Whatever the chosen remedy for fleas in the house, repeat it every other week until there are no more fleas seen for at least 2 weeks...
It takes flea eggs about 2 weeks to hatch (and nothing short of nukes or sledge hammers will kill the eggs). The idea is to get 'em, get the new ones before they breed, then get 'em again as you probably missed a couple w/ the first 2 or 3 salvos. Timing is critical.
Thanks for the input. Sounds like I need to keep on the same course. I'm planning on spraying again this weekend, which will be 10 days from first spray. The cats seem to be flea-free, so as long as I'm diligent, I have hopes of prevailing. I can't leave the water/soap out because my cats are dumb and drink the soap water and then get sick everywhere (as learned by a sink full of bleach that dummy #1 drank and then got rushed to the vet for). I haven't seen a flea for almost 24 hours, and haven't been bitten in as long either. *fingers crossed*
I have the perfect solution. I have been using it for years and have never had fleas in my house or on my cats and dogs. You have to cover your tanks because it is messy, but I use diatomaceous earth. Here is some info about it and below is a place you can order on line. Remember that a little goes a long way so you don't have to buy a ton. Make sure you purchase food grade as the stuff for pools has chemicals in it.
About the diatomaceous earth - is it kid friendly? I'm against the powders for the floors because they seem to kick up more and stay in the air longer than the spray, which dries relatively quickly (I am well aware of how crazy it sounds to be ok with one, but not the other). Does the d.e. vacuum up well? How long do you leave it on the carpets? How long does it take to work?
diatomaceous (sp) earth isn't like spraying them with alcohol... it's not instant. it is, however just like any other powder/salt for killing bugs/fleas in that it dries them up and any blood meals they get are useless since they're going to dry up and die anyway. it does not kill the eggs but it is a long term solution. if i remember correctly it is one of the safest/kid and pet friendly solutions there is. if you don't like the other powders on the market because of the risks diatomaceous earth is certainly something to look into.
DE did nothing for me. Its sitting in the closet now collecting it's own dust.
I'm fighting fleas too, finally have it 'under control', but there are still fleas all over the 2 dogs, 2 cats. Every week I spray the pets and comb out as many as I can.
None of the topical flea stuff is working for the pets. I have to manually remove them.
But at least they are out of the house for the most part....
If there is a 'higher power', I really dislike them for creating fleas!
