i've always wanted an xolotl or whatever the'yre called. They are so cute. I should of brought one

well i wish i were in australia then. i've been trying to get a salamander of any type for years, i saw two in my lifetime in the wild-that's it. i've had newts b4 but i can't even seem to get ahold of any of them anymore. i think i'm gonna get my mom to order some axolotl larvae or somn from http://bigapple.uky.edu/~axolotl/pricelist.htm
she's a college professor, as that site only allows teachers to buy stock or something of the sort. good thing about them is they ship live animals overnight too.

(I SHOULD OF BROUGHT ONE from my lfs when they where selling them)

yeh i'd like to get ahold of some myself. if possible i'd like to become a breeder as this animal is quite rare to get ahold of locally. maybe once my mom places the order i'll raise the larvae and sell them to whoever is suited to have them. maybe u guys could get a few ;)

www.wardsci.com has them available to anyone. the shipping is only 5$ too. they also shipped the type that i requested so if you want a certain color they should be able to send it.

Heres a dumb question, while I do agree that they are really cool animals, how can you keep the water at the conditions they require?

According to www.axolotl.org the ideal water temp for them is 60°-64°F. My house is usually kept at 70°F year round. With spikes up to 75+° at times (real hot days or when I do not turn on the AC). The site also says that any temps above 75° will cause major stress and possibly death.

If I were to get one, how could i keep the water cold?

well it's quite simple really, i'd keep them out of sunlit areas that may raise the temps too high and one site i read said if you were to put a frozen water bottle to float in the tank it'd help bring down the temps on hot days. you could do that whenever your temps do spike. hey moesha what color did u get? i prefer the dark/black wild-type and the white albino (pink eyes not black)

i have mine in an airconditioned room. the coolest place in the house actually. the frozen water bottle works good if temps get really sweltering. if the temp does get too extreme you can just put them in a bowl of water in the fridge (make sure to change water daily) i have an albino type, not sure if its male or female its still pretty small, 2.5". when its grown ill probably get another and keep 2 adults in a 20 ga. the leucistic (white with black eyes) look pretty neat. if you really wanted to sink the money into an aquarium chiller or just make your own if you are into that kind of thing

i'm still considering my choices:
a.buy from that site you got yours from
b.buy from this site that sells axolotls for research purposes only but more for
certain prices (1.00 for albino or melanistic larvae 2-3cm). have to be a
teacher or somn to get them though, my mom is but i dont' know exactly
how all that would work out.

i want a breeding pair in the future so i can send them with less complications than those other sites, maybe give some to reputable lfs's around my area.
