Axolotl

i'd think a 20g long may be able to house one adult or two i'll have to refer back to some sites about it

Although we use individual containers or small-group containers, others have successfully housed axolotls in filtered aquaria. As a rule of thumb, house two adults in a ten-gallon aquarium. Gravel, if used, should ideally be coarse. The axolotls will ingest smaller gravel, especially pea-sized. Although they regurgitate the gravel eventually, it's easier to avoid the problem. Be careful, especially if you use a power filter, not to circulate the water too fast (see below) and to maintain a biological filter that can convert ammonia and nitrites. Do partial water changes regularly and keep the water cool and out of direct sunlight.

got that from http://bigapple.uky.edu/~axolotl/axolotls/shortguide/guide.html
on the other sites i've read the info is basically the same. they need more surface area than anything at the bottom, water depth doesn't really matter as long as it covers the axolotl

I had no idea these lil guys would spark so much intrests. I was reading on this and im not sure wheather is it a good idea to place one in a fridge. It must get too cold in there. I was on the forums on www.axolotl.org and they mentioned homemade coolers.... seems alittle extreme.. Ive started to set up a tank and the temp is right at 68 right now... so just perfect.

SO on this site for buying axolotls that was mentioned on here earlier. you can really choose your color type? I would love to have an albino one. There faces are soo cute! especially once they develop those spots... so should i buy online or should I try to get my LFS to order one... i think i may order it..

i specified that i would like an albino on the comment section of the order form and thats what i recieved. 5$ shipping is pretty sweet too.

putting axies in the fridge is pretty standard procedure. it slows down their metabolism so they heal faster from fungal infections, helps if they swallow a piece of gravel, keeps them out of the extreme heat. they say they can be kept up to a month in the fridge without eating. i kept mine for 3 weeks giving salt baths daily to clear up a fungus on the lip. it started eating in the fridge so as long as they are eating and the temps not too cold they could stay there for 2 months easy to pass the summer so long as you keep the water changed.

did u have to adjust the temperature of the fridge? how long did it take for them to send the axolotl? i'm hoping they do overnight shipment...and did they send it with an ice pack too?

my fridge is around 43F. ive kept the axie in it for up to 3 weeks with no ill effects. it even started eating again after the first week in. it took maybe 3 days from when i ordered it to when i got the package, a box with a small sealed bucket packed in styrofoam. make sure your tank is completely cycled and the temp not above 70F. axies have no scales just skin so they are VERY sensitive to ammonia, nitrite/ate, and medicines. they are remarkably tough creatures tho and most injuries will take care of themselves in the fridge with salt bathes.
