It may be outdated, but my wife and I loved the book "Beyond Jennifer and Jason".
We'd look through the book and discuss names. We scoured our family histories for names we liked. Finally we settled on Josephine for a girl (it wasn't) and Owen for a boy (it was!).
I'll second, or is it third names that are easy to mispronounce get you teased in school.
I had the misfortune of being in the same grade as another girl with a name spelled the same as me but pronounced differently. Both of us always ended up with the wrong pronounciations. Too many people realized my name spelled backwards was a toothpaste as well.
As to odd names I've always liked my sister and cousins names, Skye and Dax.
My name is Amy, and I always got called Aim Toothpaste for most of my elementary school years too. Also, I was one of 6, that's right, SIX Amy's in my kindergarten class. Lots of different spellings. Aimee, Ayme, Amie, Amy....
I do like my name now, but I used to hate having such a common name back then.
I do kind of like skye (sky?), and we kind of had skylar at the bottom of our list, for a girl probably. I assume Angus got shot down because of Angus beef?!?! I would have voted that out too!! LOL
We enjoyed picking out names, but chose to keep them a secret until after our babies were born. Last thing I wanted to hear was how someone disliked our name choices, or put pressure on us to use family namesakes.
