I want to know what is the best effect for a background on a tank, i hear that painting it with black board paint is good, better than the printed sheets you normally would buy, what do you guys reccomend?

in my opinion, the painted black background looks the best and the neatest. it was fairly simple to apply also. some people thinks it limits the light that comes in the tank, but personally, i like it painted black.

A matt black?

There was a "cheesy background" thread a while back. A lot of folks mentioned using posterboard. Right now I am using plain old cardboard (that was wrapped around the tank when I bought it, cut to fit) and I plan on getting some black posterboard when I get around to it. I imagine the paint looks marginally better, since it's right against the glass, but my tank is up and running so buying the paint then painting would be a hassle.

I just used acrylic paint from WalMart! I only needed 2 coats and I covered the back of the big one with one 2oz (59ml) bottle. Worked very well.

What colour EMS?

I think it was called True Black, but I'm at work right now and don't have it in front of me. I'll post when I get home!

I used gloss black spraypaint on my 65g. Paint looks (to my eye at least) nicer than anything stuck to the back, and the added bonus is that water will never get between the background and the glass :)
