So, I rearranged my 10gal (pic) and put my betta in, and what a bad idea that turned out to be. He was bullying the gourami and both platies within five minutes and the danios wouldn't even come to the front of the tank. Movie. He can wait in his vase for the 5g now.

As for the 5g, what would be suggested tank mates? I would like two mystery snails but the betta would eat/attack them and I'm worried that this betta may not be community material. Four or five ghost shrimp to play clean up would be nice but my girlfriend is terrified of them....

Bleah.
 
Mixing Male bettas in with any other labyrinth fish is asking for trouble. He'd eventually stop bothering the platies and danios, but chances are would eventually kill the gourami. The betta won't eat the mystery snails, just make sure they are large enough for him to not see them as a possible food source.
 
So about a 1/2" snail?

I already put him back in the vase; I really like my gourami and my female platy is probably pregnant, and he'll be okay for another day or two in the vase.

Betta, 1 mystery snail (.5"), and two ADF's too crowded for a 5g? I'd think that'd be pushing it.
 
That sounds okay to me. The betta, a snail and two ADFs.

And yah, bettas and gouramis are a no-no together...as you found out!
 
Do all bettas attack labrynith fishes? My betta seems very peaceful and doesn't bother anybody, but I don't have any gouramis.

You could probably put an ADF, or ghost shrimps, or perhaps pygmy corries with your betta in the five gallon. Be sure not to overstock though. Two more small inhabitants would be nice.
 
My girlfriend says ghost shrimp look like monsters and won't go in my room if I get them, so those are out. And pygmy cories reqire large grous (6+) to be happy and a school of that size would easily overstock the 5g.

Too bad about the ghost shrimps! I found them pretty interesting.

Why not the adfs then?
