bad smell

I'm with Kas, my tank only smells if my head's practically in it and I have a really strong nose, ha, ha. I'd be concerned about mold hiding behind the aquarium or under the carpet like someone else said. Also, I think the warmer your water is the more likely you might smell an odor. I had to temporarily keep my tank in the garage (I'm in TX) and when it was in there it smelled a little because it was kinda warm in there.

yeah i live in texas too. the water temp stays at about 80-81 degrees. i checked for splashes and such. its sitting on a stand. and i can smell it as i move closer to the top of the tank. maybe its just normal and im over reacting. i will try the carbon like you guys suggested. i appreciate the tips

my tank has a strong earthy/wet plant smell too, and it's really weird when i'm outside after a rain thinking "gee, it smells like fish tank out here".

the only time it smelled bad was when i had some driftwood in there that was similar to the odor of sour dog crap. i could smell that when i walked by and i wasn't too happy about it. stench!

Again i have to agree with Kas

Mine smells earthy but only when head right in it. I get a stronger smell when I clean but i think that's due to me cutting foliage and chucking it in the bin - My Mrs told me to stop doing it as the house smelt like the garden!

It also smelt a lot earthier when I had an algae problem (BBA)

What sort of food have you been giving your fish? I once gave some dried shrimp to my fish, and it gave out an odor. When I stopped, the odor disappeared.

Kind Regards,
LogJam

Could it be that your tank is just dirty? Maybe if you change water more often the smell woudl go away.

i have 6 tanks in one room and no oder at all...i would assume that any odor is not good ..first before spending money on anything do an extremly good search ..do you have to replace water quite often ..maybe you have a hairline crack and it is leaking causing things to mildew, have you spilt any thing ..is there something under the tank that mybe is still wet , a rag ..a towel ..is there an air duct nearby that might be drwing moisture in from the tank..if so check it...is there any algea growing in the tank?look at the ceiling above the tank ..any tiny black brown or green spots? cgheck the light fixture maybe evaporation has caused moisture to grow there? when your search then comes up fruitless, change your water and gravel vac extremely well, and see if this lessons the smell ...and if that even fails then add carbon..but before you do ..maybe you could tell us all what type of filtration you are running? have you changed the cartidge latly? maybe the filter needs scrubbed i know mine can get pretty grubby esp. since they have lids that hold moisture in and are growing bacteria. good luck
