Belonesox fry!

those fry are very difficult to raise. also, they give birth to over 30 fry usually. they are sensitive to water and need to be fed a lot (can be difficult to water quality). they also eat small mosquito larvae and bloodworms. just keep up water changes.

I am not sure exactly on how many I got. The tank was really well planted and a few tried to dig themselves in the gravel and some were surely eaten.

Right now I got the last survivor in a 5g by himself.

I was feeding him live BBS that I begged my LFS for, then I weaned him onto frozen BBS. I also bought a ton of mosquito fish and I dumped in like 8 one day old fry for him to eat.

I have been doing 20% water changes every day, but I was sick the past two days so I haven't done any. I am going to do one tonight though.

I haven't really updated this thread as quickly as I planned to, but it's a little over a month later and the last surviving belonesox appears to be almost as big as the average rosy. Maybe 2".

I tried feeding him live brine shrimp, live BBS, frozen BS and frozen BBS. He tried frozen BS and just spit it back out and he is ignoring the others now. I tried to increase the current in the tank (It's unbelievable what this little guy can handle). I also have been trying worms on a regular basis. I think I will try to get some live blackworms to see if I can get him to eat that. I had him eating dead guppys, but even those he is starting to ignore. I think he is getting more piscivorous with age, but I will continue trying to feed him dead/frozen foods. He doesn't go longer than a day without any food though. Now he is large enough to eat the small wild guppies that LFS are getting in.

The only success I believe that I had in attempting to wean him onto frozen/dead foods is that he has become a very quick swimmer from the current. Even in the current he is a fast swimmer. He is also becoming pretty tame. He does not hide from me when I do WCs and he knows the net means feeding time.

Now for some pictures I took about a week ago.

Big update, she had about 50-60 fry.

I moved them all into a 20 gallon tank. I tried taking pictures, but they don't do must justice. I bought over 100 feeder guppies today and put them in a 20 gallon tote in hopes that they will have babies very quickly.

I had three fry in my moscow black guppy tank. I tried some blackworms, but they went ignored. I added in a guppy that was slightly larger than the belonesox to teach them to eat non live fish as well. I also tried frozen BBS. That also went ignored. I threw in the 3 guppy fry that were small enough from my moscow black guppy tank.

I was expecting fry, but going from approximately 10 at most to 50-60 is crazy.

Good Luck!

FYI - Java Moss and Guppy grass will give your guppy fry more hiding places, as will hornwort.

I hope you can post pics of the new arrivals one day :)
