I posted this on the plant borad too, but got no response so I thought I'd try here.

The anchors I'm talking about are those little metal rods you twist around the base of the plant so they stay in place. What are they made of? Its a really soft metal and the only place I've been able to find them is at Petco or e-bay. The metal looks familiar and I was thinking if I knew for sure what it was I could maybe find it at a Home Improvement store of something. Thanks!

They say non-toxic, and they're for Both FW and Marine aquariums. They're not made from lead. I had been thinking they could be pewter, I never thought about zinc. Its a familiar metal I'm just having a brain fart trying to place it.

It's soft lead - the packaging says non-toxic but I'm not sure how lead can be non-toxic.

Not all of them are lead. Sometimes they use the word "lead" and there is no lead in them.

For instance, Lee's no longer manufactures lead weights - they pulled them off the market. I suggest you find out which ones you are interested in and email the company to find out.

That's how I found out about Lee's.

These strips are a zinc alloy, non-toxic. Can't think of the other primary metal in them at the moment, but they are perfectly safe for your aquarium and to handle.

As posted, they are made of zinc....lead plant anchors stopped being manufactured before this century.

Yeah I think they just say lead. I don't really believe they are lead or else they wouldn't be safe or non-toxic.

I'd trust anything Greg Watson sells. He has weights available on his website here

Actually, that's not true.

I emailed Lee's in regards to the lead weights they manufactured and they told me that they DID contain lead and that I was to remove them from any tanks I had that contained animals.

Shortly after that they pulled them off the shelves. Here are the emails we exchanged with actual email addresses and headers removed:

Do Lee's plant weights really contain lead? Or is the term being used loosely?

Eileen,

Based on the information I have obtained through our catalog, it does appear that the plant weights contain lead.

Sincerely,

Really? I wondered because lead is poison and if you use lead in an aquarium with fish, they will die.
Can you double check with someone? Because if they are lead I'm taking them out of my tank immediately.

Eileen,

I did check with a co-worker and she indicated to me, that the plant weights to contain lead, and that we have discontinued the item for that reason.

It would be our recommendation that you do take them out of your tank.

We apologize for the inconvenience,

Stephanie Kirst
