Best Algae-Eating Inverts...?

How can you be sure of what kind of snail you are buying? I looked up apple snails and I saw something that there were several species listed as 'apple snails' and some eat live plants and some don't eat algae.

How can you be sure of what you're buying... especially when I'm probably going to have to buy online and can't see them in-person???

Apple snails are limited in availability since the recent shipping ban on potentially invasive/destructive species. A permit is now required to ship Brig's out-of-state, and the Cana's are completely banned. Pond snails and MTS are quite often offered for the cost of shipping, also ramshorns occaisonally. Nerites aren't regulated, but are generally more expensive than species that breed in fresh water.

the name apple snail is used for a variety of species in the Ampullariidae family of snails. chances are, if you bought a snail from a LFS, its probably the pomacea bridgesii and sometimes a pomacea canaliculata, which eats plants. i used to have three pomacea bridgesii and although they ate algae, they left a lot of poop.

best chance of getting what you ordered online is to use reputable sellers and online vendors, such as aquabid and so forth.

snails and shrimps would be a good choice.

I found out a breeder of beautiful, richly colored brigs snails is only a 45-minute drive away. I'm thinking I'll go visit with her and see what she can tell me about keeping a snail of my own. She has auctions on AquaBid for snails all the time.

The snails came in next day and I was SOOO impressed!! I bought 2 and she sent me a third pea-sized one. The colors are all vivid and the snails are healthy and active. I'll post pics of them next Thursday.

I received one dime-sized robin's egg blue (turned kinda greyish once in the tank) I named frodo, one nickel-sized striped purple named Samwise, and my freebie, pea-sized chartreuse 'jade' snail is named Smeagol. :D

I'll probably only keep smeagol or Samwise in the 5-gallon and put the others into my 10-gallon. Do you think the cories I have in there will bother the snails too much, though?

I wouldnt keep Smeagol... He's OBVIOUSLY evil!! :joke:

If you dont want your new (and amazing-sounding) snails in a 5g, get a few amano shrimps and mystery snails; if the snails reproduce, your amanos will eat the small ones, thus keeping them under control and giving healthy vitamins, nutrients & hunting to your shrimps!! :)
