I currently have a HOB filter (I believe it's an Aquaclear 20) but want to replace it. I've looked at internal filters but I'm concerned about damaging the betta's fins. I've also looked at canister filters but are they practical for a 10g and are they worth the $$?
Adjustable flow is always a plus as well.

Thanks for your suggestions!

ITA, I adore the AC 20 i have on mine and have had no problems for years now.

I was wrong, I have an AC30 on that tank. Would a 20 be better for a betta? I'm concerned about to much water flow and I really don't want to suck baby cherry shrimp up in the filter either. Even though the 30's adjustable, the lower setting still has a pretty good flow. I also had trouble with the motor not wanting to start back up after being shut off for cleaning so I figured it was time for a new one.

sponge filters rule and provide a nice place for the shrimp to grab a snack or you could put a pre-filter on to prevent the shrimp from being sucked up

You can place a filter meida bag over the intake and you wouldn't have to worry about the baby RCS, it may even help to decrease flow somewhat. Mine sometimes don't want to start back up either I just take the cap toa pen and touch the impellar and boom it starts right up, make sure there's nothing stuck on or around the impellar.

I think you would just have to try it out and see. If the Betta is able to swim around alright and doesn't blow out his fins, then it is fine. You can put a nylon or sponge on the intake to keep the shrimp out.

$5 air pump water bottle ac50 sponge and air stone, works fine for me.

go for the $10 wal mart pump and gang valve and do 3 10's

a FLUVAL FX5 would give your betta a thrill ride :)
