Best meds for internal parasites?

Jarred garlic can work as well, the "juice" from the jarred garlic is easy to use. Crush the pellets, add a few drops of the garlic juice, or crushed garlic paste, and allow it to absorb into the food for a few minutes. It will sink, but the fish usually seek it out. Refrigerate any unused portion for the following day. Best of luck! There is also a garlic guard sold at LFS which is a concentrated liquid version of garlic juice...but very expensive.

I went and bought some minced garlic at wal mart that comes in a jar with juice. Going to try soaking the food in the garlic juice tonight. Thanks for the great advice.

Alright so Ive done the Garlic treatment on the food for the past 2 days and still no interest. If I call up a vet and ask for some Levamisole can I just go pick it up? (anyone know what they charge?)

Also this fish is really getting skinny, if he dies and all the other fish start picking at it, can the parasites spread?

Pick the levamisole hydrochloride as soon as possible. I can't answer unfortunately about the charges. Start reading this guide while you have time. Isolate the fish and treat. Keep us updated.

On the other hand, if the fish dies, there is a likely chance your other fish will also contract it as internal parasites are often responsible for this problem.

A method of diagnosing a nematode problem is generally just a guess. When a fish is eating well yet is still not putting on weight, an intestinal infestation may be suspected. This is particularly plausible when a fish is eating regularly yet continues to lose weight, metabolizing body musculature to stay alive. This is usually seen as thinning along the back on either side of the dorsal fin. This often results in a well-fed fish starving to death.
White feces can also be an identification tool, however this can be misleading as to a true Nematode (worm) infestation, as long thin white feces is more often an indicator of a bacterial infection; generally aeromonas. This can also be an indicator of a combination bacterial and protozoan Flagellate infection, usually Hexamita.
Generally a more positive identification of internal Nematodes is a thread like worm protruding from the anus.

Unfortunately he didn't make it. :shakehead:

On the plus side I have a nice new 10g quarantine tank and plenty of meds should the situation arise again :grinyes:

i actually really like praziquantel. you can pick up prazipro pretty easily and you can soak the fish's food in it and have them eat it as well as dosing the tank itself. its extremely gentle and doesnt funk up the tank.

Sorry to hear about your fish, Jason. It's a good idea to store a container of levamisole hydrochloride. Place it in cool dark places as light can render it ineffective.
