Best Power filter out there?

It's only noisy with the top on. Its mostly quiet. I just want more filtration as well, and I don't want to get another crap filter. I wanna invest in an excellent HOB filter before I get my rams in there.

I like the silence of the AC filters compared to the Top Fin, Whisper, or Emperor HOB's, but my main problem with the AC's is that if there's a power outage, those do not re-prime themselves (or at least mine doesn't). The top fin filters that I have and the Whisper both start right back up after power has been off. The AC I have to hand-prime until it gets going again (i.e. pour water into it a few times while it's starting up). If you're looking for silence and reliablility to start back up - go with a canister. I'm finding the canisters to be better than the HOB's for filtration anyhow. The only tank at home that has the HOB anymore is the 10 gallon, and only because I don't know that there's a canister small enough to work on that tank - plus it's minimally stocked (3 guppies and 2 ADF's), so the Top Fin that's on there is more than sufficient.

I used to have a cascade 500 on a ten gallon, I closed the valve on the outlet hose slightly and it was fine. Even wide open it wasn't too bad lol

If ACs are level they can reprime themselves, if they're not quite level, then yes, you need to add water to the filter box. For the $$ ACs are by far the best option IMO & IME. But I'd take the lid off any filter if rattling is the only problem or put a rock on it.

^^ plus, rocks on top of your filter add a natural touch! Lol!

I agree. all my aquaclears regain prime as long as they are level or slightly tipped towards the tank.

The only thing I didnt like about the aqua clears are that you need to prime them with water before plugging them in and when you do take them out for maintenance the magnetic impellar sometimes does get stuck and does not start until you mess around with it.

I have 2 aqueons and I love them. I can start them up dry without priming them with water and the only thing I need to change every month is the filter cartridge. With the AC.s you need to change 3 different types of media. JMO
