I have a very sick rainbowfish, "Charlie". I've been trying to treat him for months. Salt, Metlafix and Antiobiotics didn't help, he's only gotten worse. He's so bad that the top of his lip has fallen off. No other fish has been effected. It's time to put him out of his misery. (and yes, he's in a hostpital tank)

How should I euthenize him?

I was going to put him in a cup of tank water in the freezer, but my friend says that it's cruel. He says to think of it from the perspective of this fish: What's this? It's dark, cold, I can't breath!. He drops his sick fish in the garbage disposal. It sounds cruel, but he says that it's instant, and much more humane than the freezer.

Help is appreciated! Charlie needs your help!

you can go to walgreens or drug fair, or any place that has a pharmacy/over the counter drug aisle and get clove oil. It's used typically for toothaches so it will be around there somewhere. It's in a tiny bottle and might say eugenol instead of clove. This is a anesthetic, puts the fish "to sleep" and then more is added to put the fish out. I had to use it twice and I left the fish in there for a half hour after the gills stopped moving just to be sure the fish was gone.

This is subject that comes up from time to time. Two good options, I think, are:

-- chop its head off with a sharp knife (don't cut yourself). A very quick death, but maybe not for the squeamish.

-- drop it in liquid nitrogen, if you have access to it.

:eek3:

Wow. That's the first time I've heard that one. But you're right... that -should- be instant.

Otherwise, I'd agree with the Eugenol idea. Works best.

Liquid Nitrogen!?!?! No, I don't have access to it, and while I can see the humor in that(just humor!) I wouldn't do it.

There is something about chopping the head of my pet or dropping him the the disposal that doesn't seem right, but perhaps that's all in my head. He doesn't act sick, but with his upper lip gone, watching him feed is extremely sad and his the sores on his back are just horrible, he has to be hurting.

I may purchase some clove oil, I've also read somewhere Vodka... or Liquid Nitrogen.

If you get it from the store, it'll be in an oil form and it won't mix very well with the water. If you use a baggy, pour the tank water in it, then add the clove oil, you can shake it really well so you know the water and oil are mixing. It'll turn the tank water white when the medication is thoroughly mixed.
