I was wondering what the deal is with beta's. I am looking to add one to my 10g tank and I was wondering if he would do well. I dont want to get one if they have to be in those small containers in the tank, it makes me sad (i dont care what anyone says). So my question is, will he do ok in open water in a 10g tank and what is the deal with getting two, will male/male fight or will female/male fight, or will any of them fight no matter what?

unless the male is ready for a mate, he'll fight even with females. (and after breeding they'll fight) he will ALWAYS fight with other males.

i dont know how well they like big open space like 10 gallons. theyll appreciate the moving space but most will prefer hiding spots or plants to lay on :)

(females do fine together normally but i find it hard to find them in petstores, theyre also less colorful)

I have a Betta in a 10g, and he mostly stays in his bubble-nested cave, unless it's feeding time :) . It's a good opportunity to create a cool little aqua-scape in my opinion. Lots of hiding places is what I would recommend in a 10g.

10gallons will be perfectly fine for a male betta. I advise against keeping any females in there as they will fight, and even the general population knows not to keep two males together.
In a 10g theres room for some tankmates as well. The best usually being ADFs, corys and shrimp. Give the tank some nice decorations and plants and he'll do fine.

When I first set up my 55g and it was ready for fish, my wife's favorite Betta was the first to go in. He looked a bit overwhelmed and confused at first, but within an hour he was having a ball swiming all over the place and even playing in the current from the filter. He entertained himself a lot with the bubble curtain we had set across the back of the tank.

As we added more fish, he didn't change his behavior at all. He didn't bully them, but he didn't put up with any guff either.

We eventually lost him, I think it was a gourami that did it. There were two who had become real bullies. We removed them, but too late for our little buddy "Chili" and a dwarf gourami.

We replaced him with a new Betta (Taz). Taz hides a lot. Not active at all. I think it worked with Chili because he was in there alone for a while and the other fish were added slowly. I think the problem with Taz is that, being a male Bettta, he has lived all his life alone and was put into a tank of other fish. I think he is having trouble adjusting.

...but I am certainly no fish psychologist. :)

I don't know about overload on your current set up but i had a betta in my 20 gallon with a veriety of other fish and he was very happy. If you do put him in make sure to keep up on the water changes.

How big is your bumble bee cat? I have a betta and four peppered cories in my 10gal, and they do great. I have an AquaClear Mini and I've never had a problem. I think you'll be just fine, if the cat isn't really big. Do your weekly water change and vacuum the gravel periodically.
In my opinion, and that of many others, bettas are not meant to live in small containers. They can survive for a while, but not thrive. A 10 gal is great.
Have fun!
