There appear to be opposite views on this subject. I have a Male Beta in a small (2 gal) container, and I think he's cold or maybe just bored. He certainly isn't very animated. Rather than buy a 5-10 gal. tank and adding a heater, it is a temptation to add him to my 45 gal. freshwater tank that I keep around 76 deg. This tank, however, has two large angels, 5 zebras, and 6 tetras. Should I try it? I don't want him biting them or vice versa. What do you think?

The angels won't work. But please get him something bigger.

I have kept bettas with angelfish in the past and I know several people who have, but as with any other fish, it depends on the personality of the individual fish. Give it a try if you want, but be prepared to separate them just in case.

I know there are many people on here who house their bettas in community tanks. I have a male betta that I tried to put in my tank. I watched closely for the evening, but in the morning I had a dead marble hatchetfish. Too much of a coincidence, in my mind, anyway.

If you like your current stock and are attached to them, then don't try it. Just my .02 :fairy:

Betta's Disposition

Try it. But dont release the betta outright. Be sure you put him in a clear bag. See how he reacts when an angel swims by. It realy all depends. Some SFF could care less. Others are neurotic. I have a female that almost killed my male because she was more territorial than he was! In fact the only thing she tollerates is cherry barbs - and she still bosses them around. If the angles/betta doesn't look like they are going to fight, try it outside the bag, standing by with a net to stop any sudden throwdowns.

What can go with a betta? I have a 10 gal. with a betta. I want to get some tankmates, but dont know what fish would get along with him

angels, I had angels and my male didn't do anything to him, they just stayed away, I say try it

For the most part Bettas are not very active. It takes a whole lot of energy to move those big fins around, so dont expect much if you move him. He may check things out at first, but will eventually stake out a spot to hang out in. Adding him with Angels is a recipe for disaster. Personally id get a heater for his tank and let him stay where he is.

My betta swims around a lot in his 10 gallon :) At first I had the tank at 78 degrees, but since I raised it to 80, he's much more active. He swims over to me every time I approach his tank. I put a mirror up by the tank once a day so that he can see himself and he seems to 'enjoy' the company. I tried putting 2 young female guppies in with him but he kept chasing them around so I took them out. Guess he prefers to be by himself. (Hey, isn't that part of a song? lol) :girl:

Ratherbe, Do you bother with a filter or bubbler with your 10 gal? Or just the heater? With my current arrangement (really, just a very large vase), I just do a 100% water change once/week.
