Betta and sparkling gourami

dont put gouramis and bettas together. sparkling gouramis are peaceful, but its not the gouramis that are going to be causing the trouble; its the betta.

i would strongly advise against putting a dwarf gourami and betta together as well. nothing but aggression will come of it.

:iagree: yup , it s the betta that will shred the others , they r really brutal when they attack . and i don think betta and GBRs is a good mix too , the GBRs r colorful and the betta even after a year may decide there s no place for any other colorfull fishes in the tank !

I doubt color would really have to do with it...besides, rams tend to inhabit the bottom 1/2 of the tank while bettas are usually the opposite. I dont see any problems with mixing the too.

Also, a breeding ram could knock out a betta any day. :grinyes:

I've never had a Sparkling Gouramis (unless that's the same as a Paradise Gourami) but I've always kept male Bettas with every Gourami I've ever had/have and never once had a problem. Blues, Golds, Pearls, Paradise & Dwarfs. I didn't know you weren't supposed to mix them and evidently my Bettas and Gouramis didn't know either :-)

I know the general rule is to not mix gouramis and bettas, but I've also heard that sparkling gouramis are the most peaceful gouramis. When I did a search, I find mix results. I guess I won't try it, unless others have some postive experience here.

What about bettas and Bolivian rams?
Sparkling gouramis aren't exactly peaceful once they become dominant in the tank. I had a few of mine beat up my male guppies since I underestimated their behavior. They were fine with licorice gouramis though.

Bettas and Bolivian rams should work just fine as long as neither attempts to spawn.

Sparkling gouramis are shy fish and get startled pretty easily IME. I would not risk mixing with another anabantid in such a small space.
A 20g will work just fine for samurai gourami, sparkling gourami, licorice, croaking and chocolate. All five are pretty much docile except when some begin to spawn or suffer shortage of territories. Choose two species for a 20g and it'll work just fine especially in a heavily decorated tank. Since these are not all that flashy in color, they are unlikely to battle each other to death and that's out of the norm for these gouramis.

Sparkling gouramis are Trichopsis pumila. Here's my blog article on them.

Another for licorice.

I just wanted to add that just because a fish seems peaceful now, it won't always be that way. Some days your fish will decide to be more aggresive, and then the next day he'll be back to normal.

Ex. I have a Dwarf Gourami who shares his home with 2 juvie guppies, and 6 Harlies. He never chases at them or anything and they don't bother each other. Then one day I put in a piece of cucumumber in for the snails, and the Gourami decides he owns it and starts guarding it. Anytine a Harlie or Guppy happened to wander by he'd chased them away and go back to guarding it. It was actually quite ammusing to see.

Sparkling Gouramis are too similar in appearance to a Betta. The Betta would probably attack it and then kill it or possibly hybridize with it and then kill it.

Thanks for the info, everybody.

My newest betta is still in QT for another 23 days. I'll have to decide what to do by then. I think I'm going to give the rams a shot because I know what they act like (at least, what they act like for now...). I'll probably rearranged the plants and whatnot right before I add him.
