A few days ago I put a diy surface skimmer in my Betta's (Fred's) tank. To get the skimmer to fit right I had to take the intake strainer of my filter off.

I did not think Fred would be able to get into the skimmer let alone the filter intake but today I came home from school and found Fred stuck in the intake tube:(:(:(:(:(.

I had to use pliers to get Fred out, It was the only way to get him out.

I was as gentle as possible but when I was able to get Fred out he had many wounds even where the pliers did not touch him. Fred also had pop eye and what I assume are organs are sticking out of one of the wounds and his top fin was gone:cry::cry::cry::cry:.

I know he is not going to make it:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:.

I am planning to put him down with the clove oil and vodka technique. I will post a pic of him if anyone wants me to.

Fred meant so much to me. And now he is slipping away from me:(.

awwww im soooo sorry
all u can do for him his try ya best an make him comfortable

i am terribly sorry to hear about Fred! Its a crappy situation, but accidents do happen. Keep your head up.

I humanely euthanized (spelling?) him a while ago and it was not easy.

It was made easier because I knew Fred was suffering a lot so I felt like I was doing him a favor.

I used the clove oil and vodka method.

He was the first fish I ever really felt a connection to. Sure I had gold fish when I was younger but I never really developed a connection with any of them.

Yeah, missing fins and scales can grow back, but organs sticking out can't be helped. Sorry, bettas are hard to lose.

I'm so very sorry for your loss, Jspigs. Please, please don't beat yourself up over this. Accidents happen, we're human. You loved that little guy and gave him a good home and a good life.

He had so much more than most of those poor little Bettas in cups that wind up in a vase full of Ivy roots, or a brandy snifter, or tiny little bowl that is rarely cleaned.

I believe that Bettas do bond with their keeper. They are such intelligent and curious little things. I'm sure he felt happiness all of his days with you.

Please take comfort in knowing how much good you did for Fred, not the least being the final act of love and compassion in ending his suffering. That took so much courage, and self sacrifice.

I'm so sorry for your sad loss.
