Betta has popeye - treatment questions

Thanks, BFM, for the input on the BR; I know you've had a lot of success with it. I wasn't concerned so much about the methylene blue or smidgen of malachite green in the Betta Revive, but moreso the drug interraction with the antibiotic, which is Neomycin.

However, both of the Jungle lab medicated foods say on the bottles, (I dug around in my fish medicine box), that they "may be used with water treatments, external antibiotic, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic water treatments", so I wouldn't worry about the Betta Revive with the medicated foods, after reading that.

I do worry a little about stopping the antibiotic food before the full treatment course, and I'm not sure yet about combining the two foods and using them together, though it seems to my memory, which is not infallable, that it is OK to do so. I'm pretty sure I remember doing those two together without problems, but I wouldn't swear to it. I want to look back through my notes to double check that.

I guess my fallable memory didn't serve me well on the garlic issue, I was thinking that it was believed that there was somewhat of an antiparasitic action in the garlic for many internal parasites, whether it's by killing them or running them out of town, so to speak, lol.

I have used the antiparasitic food before and it is really great, so I do think we may need to use that as soon as we've gone a couple of more days on the antibiotic food.

I know metronidazole, an antibiotic, is in the antiparasitic food and it may pick up where the other leaves off if we change mid-stream... I've just always preferred to go the full course once I've started a specific antibiotic, unless of course there is no improvement and things are worsening with the particular antibiotic; then I would make a change to something else.

At any rate, we are all putting our noggins together on this to do everything we can to help your little guy get well.

Please give us an update in the morning, asap. Go on poop patrol and report back on the color, character, quantity and quality of his poop; sounds sorta like grading diamonds, lol.

Hey all. The BR arrived today and it is much tinier than I expected. They must assume everyone keeps their bettas in jars or something. I have to add 40 drops for 5 gallons, which is about half of the bottle and obviously not enough for 3 days. So I only put in 20 drops and that should last me 3 days if I'm lucky. I hope this is enough. Don't know what else to do. I could order more but uggghhhh. I sort of want to cry right now

Sparky's doing about the same as yesterday. The blue water didn't seem to alarm him as much as it did me. Still giving him the medicated pellets of course. He didn't want to eat one this morning but I finally coaxed him into it.

with BR i find that daily 100% water changes are what make the BR most effective. maybe you have a small 1 or 2 gallon bowl you could move him into and medicate for a few days along with 100% water changes?

whenever i've used BR it's been in an unfiltered bowl with the daily changes, and i've never used BR for more than 4 consecutive days.

I agree with BFM, if you could use a smaller bowl, a 1 or 2 gallon bowl, and do daily 100% changes while doing the BR this would help the BR go further.

You really wouldn't have to worry about ammonia or water quality, even in an unfiltered bowl, with daily 100% water changes. Also, her recommendation of no more than 4 days sounds good, too.

How is your little guy today? Hope he's improving. Update when you can.

Oh, he looks much better tonight! He greeted me when I got home and he's been swimming around a lot more. Still has a ways to go, but I think he's turned a corner. I can't put him in a smaller bowl because the heater wouldn't fit. I could rig something up, but I can't risk a temp fluctuation, and I'm at work from 7-5 and wouldn't be able to monitor it. But I lowered the water line a little. He doesn't seem to mind it. No adverse reaction at all like the Maracyn. I'm going to order more BR to keep on hand. So far, so good though. And I'm still feeding him the medicated pellets too. Oh, and I saw him poop yesterday and it was tubular. Will keep you posted!

This is such good news!!! Tubular poop!! YAY!!!! You're doing an awesome job with him. I understand completely and agree on keeping his temp stable.

Keep us posted. I'd love to see more pics of your little buddy. I'm sorry, but I didn't catch his name and didn't see it specifically mentioned... is he Sparky?

I am feeling very positive about the outcome... I'm icing down the champagne.

Coming in late here - sorry. (Getting a rescue dog transported from MI to NY and it's been nightmarish trying to get it all set up and taking every second of "free" time it seems!)

In any case: I'm so glad to hear he sounds like he's doing a whole lot better! Whew! (And thanks for the nice words, Chickadee and Mel! :) )

BTW and FWIW:
I've gotten flake from kensfish.com that has garlic in it. You can also get flake with the active component of garlic, allicin, in it and not have the nice smelly effect of whole garlic
A really nice (IMO) pelleted food that has garlic in it is New Life Spectrum Betta Formula. Not sure if I'm allowed to put links here - if not, mods please remove - but I get mine here. Chickadee, told ya, when I send the snail(s), I'll include a bunch of it for you - that jar is wayyyy too big for my guys. It would take 3 years to get through! But if you want me to send you some right now instead of waiting, that's absolutely fine too - at least there'd be more garlic. E-mail me and lmk and I'll get some right out to you.

Anyhow - so very glad to read how well he's doing. I smiled when I read that you felt he'd turned a corner. Woo-hoo!! :grinyes:

:lol::rofl:

Yep, nothing brightens your day like seeing good healthy fish poop.

I'm gonna stock up on Betta Revive, myself. The stuff is not just for Bettas, in my book.

I would keep up the anti-parasitic food for the recommended period, garlicky english pea once a week as you have been doing.

I'm so glad he's doing better. I would keep up the water changes for a while. Stay vigilent to any changes in appearance and behavior; I know you do that always.

So nice of you Saje, to offer Sparky some garlicky goodies from your own stock. I think garlic should be a mainstay in the fishy diet. :D

Keep up the good work, Chickapee. You've done an awesome job taking care of your little patient.
