Betta Help...EMERGENCY

I am rather curious about this...do they suggest treating the injection site as well to off-set infection? Will the draining be permanent or something that will need to be done again, and again, and so-on? Do they feel the swelling is a symptom of something else more serious, a reaction, or just a biological issue?

Heh, sorry for all the questions, it’s an interesting issue I’d like to know more about.

They didn't say about treating the injection site but they did say it seemed to not bother the fish that much and within minutes the fish was back to normal, swimming around and begging for food. I don't think it was a permanent thing as one person said they had completed this 6-7 times on their betta. One person suggested that kiddneys shutting down may cause the body to retain fluids. Hope that helps.

Here's something I came across on wetwebmedia that might help. The epsom salt is to help release the excess fluid from the system, however you'd have to figure out how much epsom salt to add for your size tank...

"...Try mixing in the equivalent of one level teaspoon of Epsom Salt to relieve the swelling, and try feeding some live or frozen Brine Shrimp in the hopes of helping your Betta. Please read here re others efforts with similar complaints: http://wetwebmedia.com/FWSubWebIndex/betdisfaqs.htm"
Take care,
Mary.

Thanks Bunny13 for the info. Geeze, 6-7 time draining it...poor betta.

WIll get some Epson Salts tonight and Phred will be fasting for awhile.

Thanks for the info Mary!

Well sad news on my front.....yesterday my betta died. As noted in my last posting, his bloating had gotten worse on one side, where his scales had come away, showing some fish flesh. I assume it must have burst, because the fluid was gone, and he almost looked normal....except for being dead. (sorry poor humor)

As for the breeder idea, while I have no idea how true that might be.....It is strange that all 3 appear to be of similar coloring. Mine was a rich royal purple with tips/steaks of red. I choose it because for my local store it was an unusual color. I was tired of the same deep reds and solid blues they normally carry.

As for feeding, I was giving him a combination of Omega One Betta buffet flakes, mixed with some TetraMin Tropical flakes. I chose to do this, since he shared his 20g tank with a school of six cardinal tetras and some cories.

I hope that you other two don't have the same end.

Ya, it was the coloring that I noted too, they all seem to be very similar in both color and type. It would be hard to track down where these fish came from, but I'm wondering if they didn't all come from the same breeder. Hope the others do better.

I send my condolences, too  your fish did seem the farthest along.
I hope the other 2 bettas pull through.

Phred was on a 2 week regimen of Maracyn two-no help.

Now on second day of fast and Epson Salt treatment...
