Betta Help...EMERGENCY

too bad....

Sorry about your loss, I just came accross your posts today.

I had to look it up in my favorites but....

What your Beta suffered from was "Popeye aka Bloated belly"
is a blockage in the gut from(among other things) feeding it a vegetarian diet. Betas are meat eaters and need meat in thier diet. Flake food & beta pellets are not very healthy for your fish.

Quote;

"you should mix in, substitute some freeze-dried, sun-dried, frozen/defrosted, live... meaty foods occasionally. Small crustaceans, worms and insect larvae (Daphnia, Brine Shrimp, Glass Worms, Blood Worms.

I hope this helps others.

I got some more responses and some people think that it may be "Malawi Bloat" which is caused by a protozoa called Hexamita. They seem to think that Metronidazole or Flagyl from a vet would help. If you do find a vet they may be able to take a sample of the fluid and test it to see what the cause was.

Im not convinced. I think this sounds much more like the fluid build-up that bunny has been talking about.

Plus, popeye isnt also known as bloated belly. :)

Double Plus, if it was popeye, the maracyn 2 treatment aardvark used would have cleared it up. :)

Well I tried the Epson Salt bath (1 tbl per gal) 15-20 min - twice a day. It didn't seem to help at all. He's pretty much fasted for 2 weeks or so. Wouldn't touch a pea or any other kind of food (he would eat the orig stuff that probably had something to do with this). He looked like he had a hole a couple days ago. Kinda reminded me of if your hand had been swollen too long, the skin would split at the tightest spot and then peel back. It must have formed a leak. Now he has a small bubble left - not sure if how much is left over loose skin - he may still have a little fluid in him. But hey he's still swimmin!!! I'll update with any changes!

Wow, glad he's still swimming! Bettas are notoriously stubborn when switching foods, but when he gets hungry enough he’ll eat, just be persistent. Good luck and I hope he doesn’t relapse.

Great News!

But now I wonder if Phred would have pulled through....

Thanks for all the support from everyone. "Zag" (aka my fatty) seems relatively ok - well he's always seemed pretty ok considering.I'm sorry about your fish (jjanoch) ~ and my appologies for not saying that sooner. I didn't catch if Phred had also passed?!? Well, mine had gotten so much bigger and had developed that hole looking thing and I knew one on this forum didn't make it, so I was prepared for him to die. I had called my vet (yeah, they laughed a bit) to see if they'd use a syringe, but they only offered to give me one. They did tell me there used to be a "good fish guy" at PetCo - so I called there. No experts I guess, but I asked that guy if he was in pain, and he said probably. I asked about ending it sooner and he said the freezer was the most humane way but that they had drops that would put them to sleep. He said I could bring him the next day as he was just getting off work. I didn't think Zag would make it through the night, but he did and I was just about ready to go to PetCo the next day when we noticed what had happened. He's still not eating - but I'm sure he's quite stressed.

explained in this thread

Put him down, was getting worse.

Now have Phred II. Hopefully he will be as good as his namesake!
