I just bought my betta last thursday night from Petsmart. He is a very healthy and happy little guy, but he won't do what my other bettas did. He won't flare. I have put the mirror in front of him and he looks straight at it and won't flare. It's like he knows that it's himself and he doesn't feel threatened. Is something wrong with my betta? Why won't he flare? How can I make him flare? Thanks for all the advice.

P.S. I would never take him back if he doesn't flare and I don't want to make him flare all the time, but I think it's cute when they flare. I also took the mirror away after awhile so he wouldn't tire himself out.

He might just need some time to adjust to his new surroundings, make the territory "his," and be ready to defend it against any and all comers.

In other words, give him a little time. :)

My betta won't flare with a mirror either. But he does flare at a black background that I made and laminated. The lighting has to be right so that it creates a reflection, and I obviously can't put the background on the tank like I'd originally planned (or he'd flare himself to death). But every few days I put the background on the back of the tank, and let him flare for a little while. So try a few different things, and different lighting situations.

Oh, my gawd!! We're witnessing evolution first hand! A male betta who won't be fooled by that old mirror up to the glass trick. I wonder if his offspring would show the same trait or if this is a learned behavior. :grinyes:

I'm going with everybody else he just needs time to settle in.

Betta's should get 15 minutes of 'flare' each day... It's like exercise for them!!

It could be that the betta is too used to flaring. it sounds strange, but I have heard it many times. apparently if a betta is around other bettas or its reflection too much it will get used to it and stop flaring
