Ok...I have a poll and a few Qs.

1. Do you adivise getting a heater for a 2.5g tank, for a betta? The heater is for a 5g, so it might be dangerous. If I dont use a heater I can use a stronger lighting that would warm the tank up a bit.

Please, if you chose other in my poll, please say what other color you mean. Also, for reference, my current betta is white red and blue, so I would like to have a different color. (or at least not a combo of them)

I'm fairly new to the small tanks, I've only had my 2.5 betta tank for a couple of months now. I would be afraid of a heater in such a small tank! I have trouble keeping the one in my 35 gallon consistent!! I personally would go for the extra light, and just make sure the tank is in a warmer part of the house if possible to keep in ok overnight! My betta is mostly blue, but he has a couple of reddish, purple areas, hes very pretty!! But, I think the best thing to do is just get one from your LFS that looks healthy and just wait til you find one that catches your eye!! Every once in a while, I see one that is stunning and I wish I could bring them home!! I assume you're getting a second one :D !

yes im getting a second 1....the good thing is at my LFS all the bettas are very healthy because they arent kept in dixie cups, they keep them in like 100g tanks divided into 50 2g sections...so they are pretty well off there....but I am thinking of just seeing one that catches my eye. My cuurent betta is the one in my avatar.

thanks for the link. I checked it out, and depending on how much shipping is, i'll order it and give it a try....i can always start out my betta with no heat, and add it in after.

If your temp in the room is high enough, you may not need one... My dorm room is an overzealously heated 80+ degrees at all time, so my betta's always got a comfortable temperature. Although that foster and smith link looks a lot better than the 2-5G heater I saw at wal-mart.

One thing I can't say enough about is live plants. His 2.5 is stuffed with wisteria and java moss, lit by a 10w desk lamp. So he's got his own little tropical swamp all to himself, and is happy as can be.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have decided to keep my betta in the tank with some plants, and sand as my substrate. The house is always about 74*F, and the lighting I am using will kick up the temp like 1-2*F...so I'm not too worried, and in the summer the house is about 76...its cool...I might get my betta today! YAY...I'm really excited...the LFS normally has a very good selection of healthy ones since they arent stored in the little plastic cups. I will post pics of the new fish within a few days!

OOOH I might have to get a heater myself!! the tank is usually around 71-72 degrees, but I know it should be a little warmer. I might have to get one for next winter! then again, I am picking up a couple of 10g tanks this weekend so mr. betta might get an upgrade :D

i just bought another betta yesterday (but i was so sad about my molly's death that i didnt care telling anyone). i put him in a 2.5 gallon, got a small filter and a heater for 2-5 gallons at Walmart. If there's an walmart near you, check it out for this heater. I havent put it in the aquarium though, because my house's temp is around 80F and his tank is 78F now. So, he might be ok, without the heater.

btw, i voted for you to get "other". i'm not a big fan of reds and blues cos i think they're too common, unless they have an extra feature like yours. i like the white ones (opaque or pastel), but since you already have a whitish one...

here's a picture of the one i got yesterday
