Betta Sorority failed

i've had as many as 30 i my gal. at one time but have lots of plants that cover most of the bottom and moss up the sides some have lots of places to hind in.

Try adding some indian almond leaf into the tank - it works wonders. Also try using a mirror to play with him a couple minutes a day. Don't worry about the mirror stressing him as long as you only keep it to a couple minutes a day. If your filter creates a lot of current, slow it down enough so that he can build a bubble nest. Ideally, this would all stimulate some territorial/breeding behavior in the male. Hopefully, he'll build a bubble nest and patrol his territory - giving him some purpose and something to do.

He ignores mirrors. I've tried it before he just looks at his reflection and moves along. I've also never seen him build a bubble nest though the current in the 55g is too high for any nest of sorts. Maybe the 10g will work, he seems to be moving around more. Temperature is 80 degrees in the 10g unlike the 55g with 75 degrees. I'm thinking about getting pygmy cories for the 10g. Will have to be months down the line but why not scheme a little eh? :D

It's a few months later, so how's it going?

This is where tank dividers come in handy. Not only are they separated, but the divider itself becomes endlessly fascinating to both parties. Trying to figure out what's on the other side gives them something to do.

I use the dividers all the time. Make them with plastic needle point canvas and plastic window edging. also place a small square of plastic place mat in one corner of the divider to give a safe area for the betta.
I have both 5 gal and 10 gal female betta tanks. Once and a while I do get a bully. I find the main key is to have odd numbers of bettas. Make sure there are hiding places and lots of plants.
I use what I call betta houses. PVC pipe connecters. About 2" long and 3/4" around. I place 1 for each betta and an extra one. Works great. Each betta picks their favorate.
Good luck,
Catherine

those little pipes are good! I like to use the little 3 way ones, they have more directions to choose from lol. These also help to fulfill their desire to squeeze into small spaces without posing a threat (my fish are always showing me things that need to be adjusted so they don't ram themselves into someting and get squished! - Though I'm getting much better at telling that beforehand now and avoiding it all together, but I have lost a couple fish cause they freaked out or something and got jammed somewhere they shouldn't have been able to get into. :( )
My boys like the pipes too.
I've tied a couple to suction cups and placed (the curved elbow ones) them in the corners, they like to sit on them and the khulies hang out the sides. :)

Hmm... I've neglected all my duties as a fish keeper. I will admit that I do have a pychological disorder and when my disorder kicks in, I shut down. With that in mind let me tell you what happened to my tank.

The movement of the girls went fantastic and everything was all well. My king betta died from his eye being popped out (very rusty with everything fish now) and my neglection. There was also a silent killer in my 55 gallon for months. Every week I would lose fish and I always found masses of snail eating their corpses at the bottom of the tank. My two original snails had bred and had hundreds of babies who were now adults. I would still do weekly water changes and I would measure my parameters but all was within range. Fish kept dying to the point that I had 30% of my stock left and a bunch of snails. I would always see snails inside their shells, withdrawn, at the bottom of the tank. I had read that they would sometimes do this and it was the norm. Turns out these fellows were actually dead and beginning to rot inside my tank. So you can imagine hundreds of these fellows rotting within my tank, and it slowly killed everything. It didn't help that my depression was back and I couldn't escape my own mind, the last thing I would think of were others as I tried to help myself. Fast forward to now, I have 4 rainbowfish, 3 cherry barbs, 3 peppered cories, 1 danio, and 2 female bettas left. Used to have 6 rainbow, 6 barbs, 6 cherries, 8 danios, 5 bettas, 6 kuhlii's. My ten gallon has 1 african dwarf frog in it. I had replaced the betta with 5 frogs but after keeping them for 2 months, 4 frogs managed to escape in the middle of the night and I woke up to 4 dried up frogs.

So my tanks are mostly empty, and while I am stable I really want to keep fish. I'm just paranoid that I might become unstable and kill everything again. It saddens me looking at my mostly empty tanks knowing I could have easily stopped this mess. I'm currently in the process of deciding whether I want to donate most of my fish and start over or just shut down this whole hobby. I apologize for the grim news of my set up and understand whoever gets angered or frustrated for this massive killing of fishes. :(

Wow, I'm really sorry to hear how it turned out :( Briggs can be tricky like that, I try to always keep an eye on them because they can just suddenly die with no apparent cause. I prefer to keep them in their own tank, for this very reason.

My suggestion is you take care of yourself, get yourself the help you need before you attempt to take on more fish. This hobby will always be there when you are feeling more up to it. As a fellow sufferer of depression, I know how it is when you get in a really bad way. Medication has never worked well for me, always had really bad side effects. For a couple of years now I've been taking St. John's wort and it's made a big difference in my life, along with being in a better living situation overall.

Having not been on in a while... I dunno what the quality of the forum is of late but I'm rather surprised that no one has said something about the size of the tank itself. Having kept several successful sororities I say 10g is rather small, ESPECIALLY for 5 females. It may be possible but you would need to drop the number to 3 and add LOTS of cover. For 5? I think 29g is a minimum.

Then again there is always those rather aggressive ones that won't live with anything, no matter the size.

the 10g I believe was just a frog and the king betta. the sorority was in another tank, I don't remember the size op said, but it's listed somewhere in here...
