Betta tank upgrade - what to do with the 1.5gallon?

I wouldn't add any other fish to the tank with him personally. Maybe a snail, but nothing else.

It is cute how their personalities change so much when they actually have room to move isn't it!

The only reason I suggested fish is because I know one long-term Betta keeper who keeps a single feeder minnow in the tank as entertainment for her Bettas. I don't really agree with this as the feeder minnows are coldwater and like groups, but I was wondering if it could be duplicated.

The type of fish we are suggesting live in little mudholes which is why we are suggesting them. The 6g is plenty for the Betta.

I was talking about the 1.5g since the main idea of the thread was asking about what to put in it. But I also wouldn't put any other fish in the tank with the Betta either.

I'm not sure about another pal for Speed, I know that some people have put platys with them but I think that it is a trial and error with that one. Sometimes they get along and other times they don't.

For the 1.5 gal if you don't have a heater get a thermometer first. I don't have a heater in my Eclipse 3 and it stays right at 78 -80 degrees. A lot of things affect the heat in your tank, the lights, the filter itself and ambient room temp. If you decided that a heater is necessary then I would go with the Hydor from PETCO. It is rated for a 2-5 gal tank. Pro: you can put it under the gravel so that it doesn't take up valuable space in the tank. Con: if it gets to warm you have to unplug it so a thermometer is a must no matter what.

I think that the only suitable fish for a 1.5 gal is a betta. I would try a planted tank depending on the lighting or if the light is lacking you can try and up grade it. Then my vote would be for inverts as well.

I'm with schizoty about the betta in the 1.5. IDK about the killifish, but bettas really are MUCH happier in a 5 gallon +

c'mon guys, move on about the 1.5g remember he's putting the betta into the 6g and then wants to get tankmates, i'd recommend some male endlers, or killifish and then some cherry shrimp, if the betta will tolerate tankmates(usually they do but occasionally you'll find one that doesn't)

Update:
Speed (the betta) is zipping around his 6 gallon with my two lonely harlequin rasboras. He was interested in them for the first 5 minutes, and now he just ignores them. They've been together for 3 days, and everyone looks good. Once I get a moss log going and some more plants I will pull the rasboras and have shrimp in there with Speed - but it is nice to know he can stand company.

The 1.5 is in my office with some plants in it, but no other life for now. Once i see how the plants come on I'd like to add a few mystery snail babies to put in other tanks as they get bigger.
