I was curious what the largest HOB filter you guys put on a 10G tank without its inhabitants being overwhelmed.

I was thinking of getting a Hagen AquaClear Power Filter 50 (100GPH), but the AquaClear 30 (150GPH) is only $6 more, and then the AquaClear 50 (200GPH) is only $3 more... I figure more media is better, but I don't want to make a whirlpool in my tank.

On MFK I saw a pic of a 5 gallon with an ac110 on it! But seriously you will be fine with a 200 gph filter on it. I have 350gph on my 20 gallon and it's fine, and I've done an ac50 on a 10 gal before.

I have a AQ rated for 50gals on my 10gal QT tank. Cause quite the whirlpool but I just put a lot of hiding places in the tank for them to get out of it.

I have a penguin 200 (200 gph) on my ten gallon getting it ready for another tank and it dont cause a whirlpool at all. It dose have a bio wheel on it tho. But i think you would be fine with the filter on there.

I may just go with the 50 for the extra power. If there is too much current even with it on low power, I may just figure out some sort of diffuser.

the older model of emperor 400 has adjustable flow the new models dont not a good move from marineland on saving a nickel but i have used them on 10G snail rearing tanks and they work great.

Anything rated at 100ph is optimal... unless you're overstocked. You don't want a whirlpool you want a pleasant habitat for the fish.

i've put an Elite Hush hob filter rated for 55gals onto a 10 gallon housing 3 small common goldies before. large/long airstone bar in the tank too. goldies loved it, but i would think tropical fish might like a gentler flow.

i'm currently running a 20 gallon long with an Aquaclear 50 on it (placed at centre rear of tank). 20 long has about the same height as a 10, just a longer tank.

I have a 40 gph BoYu WF-2015 on a two gallon betta tank right now and he is fine. The biggest i have ever done on a ten gallon is a whisper model 3 at 330 gph the tank was stocked with bluntnose minnows. Go for the bigger filter as you can always turn the flow down on an AC
